The first Percy Jackson film adaptation, Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lightning Thief was pretty much a poor man’s Potter. Without the avid readership pummelling the film into the annals of literary and cinematic history. It clung to the framework of Harry Potter as if its every success was reliant on it. The sequel arrives in cinemas this summer and to prepare us for Percy, Fox have dropped a new full length trailer for Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters.
If the first adventure of Percy and pals did little to excite you, it’s unlikely this preview will either. Now, in all seriousness it bags a handful of points for containing flashes of the following: massive swimming dragons who could have been in Pacific Rim, a massive red devil, huge wolves, robots getting demolished with spears (?) and possibly the film’s saving grace: Nathan Fillion. Yep, Captain Reynolds is along for the ride as the God Hermes.
Fox have crammed in a ton of eye catching material into this trailer. Thing is, it’s likely that as per usual, this is the most exciting stuff from the film. For a premise which involves our hero chasing down a golden fleece in the ocean, they shove in as many genre tropes and icons as possible. Regardless of whether or not they fit into a coherent story.
Based on the publishing phenomenon, PERCY JACKSON: SEA OF MONSTERS continues the young demigod’s epic journey to fulfill his destiny. To save their world, Percy and his friends must find the fabled and magical Golden Fleece. Embarking on a treacherous odyssey into the uncharted waters of the Sea of Monsters (known to humans as the Bermuda Triangle), they battle terrifying creatures, an army of zombies, and the ultimate Evil.
Percy Jackson: Sea Of Monsters opens in cinemas on August 7th, 2013.
