We Now Have Confirmation Of The Year That Captain Marvel’s Set In

A few days ago, actress Brie Larson took to social media with an image from the upcoming Captain Marvel that led many fans to believe that the film will be set in 1991 or 1992 due to its “Rock the Vote” posters, among other details. Now, however, a new source has emerged that shifts the date to 1995, and there’s good reason to believe that this time the internet has it right.

The reveal comes from the Marvel section of Disney’s official Japanese website, where fans have found some text which seemingly confirms that Carol Danvers’ period pic will be set in the year of Toy Story and Batman Forever. If this is the real deal – and again, it looks like it could well be – then perhaps we can just dismiss those old poster clues as the production team not scrutinizing their props quite as intently as the rest of us do.

What’s more, should 1995 be the year that they’ve settled on, then that pretty much throws out those old predictions of a nod to the death of Tony Stark’s parents, though you can bet that theory-happy fans will come up with plenty of potential MCU events that fall closer to this new date.

In any case, seeing how the first Captain Marvel trailer opened with our hero falling into a Blockbuster, you can expect a few more nods to the pop culture landscape of the 1990s, though presumably Carol will be too busy fighting Skrulls and hanging out with a young Nick Fury to spend too much time listening to the new Alanis Morissette album (besides, she’s more of a Nine Inch Nails fan). Either way, we’ll see what crucial role she has to play in MCU history when the film hits theaters on March 8th, 2019.
