For years industry, insiders confidently said the Snyder Cut would never happen. They argued that the footage didn’t exist, that completing it would be too expensive, and that Warner Bros. management had forever parted ways with Zack Snyder. That didn’t stop the passionate movement from campaigning for its release, with their efforts eventually bearing fruit in 2021 when Zack Snyder’s Justice League hit HBO Max.
To further tweak the nose of haters, not only did the film happen, but even the most ardent critics were forced to admit it was a clear improvement on the dreadful theatrical cut. Now, more than two years on from the confirmation that the project was going ahead, WETA Digital has released some concept art from their work on the film showing off their additions:
It’s a fun peek behind the scenes, and a nostalgia trip for fans who spent years subsisting on the concept art Snyder gradually posted to keep hope alive.
Since then, fans have continued campaigning for this story to continue, with the brand new epilogue teasing a post-apocalyptic adventure that focuses on a bizarre version of the Justice League featuring Batman, Deathstroke, Mera, Cyborg, the Flash, and… the Joker. This would have seen the team squaring off against an Anti-Life corrupted Superman, and struggling to save their broken world.
We’d still love to see it, but sadly any hopes of Snyder returning to the DCU seem slim. He’s hard at work on Netflix space opera Rebel Moon, and has said nobody at Warner Bros. since the management change has been in touch. Even so, with his friend James Gunn now steering the DC ship, who knows what might happen?
