7 Comic Book Storylines We Want To See On The Big Screen

With new superhero movies coming out seemingly every other week, it's a great time to be a comic book fan. After all, there's nothing like seeing your favorite characters being brought to life on the big screen in ways that make you jump for joy and spill your popcorn all over the unlucky sap sitting next to you. And while it's a thrill to see certain storylines adapted to the big screen, there are still hundreds upon hundreds that we've yet to see translated to live-action. With the DCEU and the MCU going strong, and seemingly everyone else trying to get their own cinematic universe off the ground, it's now time to really start speculating on what stories these titans could tell next. So, join us as we take a look at 7 classic storylines from the comics that need to find their way onto the big screen in the near future. Batman: Under The Hood How have their been 11 theatrical Batman films, but not one of them has adapted the famous "Under the Hood" arc? It’s criminal, really. For those that don’t know, "Under the Hood" is famous for bringing back the second Robin, Jason Todd, and turning him into a vigilante who isn’t afraid to kill off bad guys. It’s a fantastic Batman story because it brings the hero's 'no kill' rule front and center. In case you're not familiar with the story, it sees the Joker beat Jason Todd to death with a crowbar, and it’s only because of the magical Lazarus Pit that he makes his surprise resurrection. However, he’s hurt that Batman didn’t retaliate by killing the Clown Prince of Crime and is now seeking his own vengeance, forcing the Dark Knight to make some hard decisions. Hopefully we’re closer to seeing this storyline happen on the big screen now that we have a rebooted Batman. The pieces are there, after all, with Batman V Superman revealing that Jason Todd has indeed been killed by the Joker. Let’s just hope then that Matt Reeves’ upcoming solo outing for the Caped Crusader adapts, or at least plants some more seeds for "Under the Red Hood." Hush Then again, if Reeves decides to go with a different, critically acclaimed Batman story, he could adapt the famous "Hush" arc. The story pits Batman against a mysterious foe, one that seems hellbent on destroying the Caped Crusader from afar. It’s revealed that the bandaged man is known other than Thomas Elliot, a childhood friend to Bruce Wayne who works as sort of a dark mirror to him. What’s truly great about the "Hush" storyline is how it incorporates just about all of Batman’s major villains, as well as his Bat Family and Superman, in fantastic ways, without overshadowing the main villain. Reeves needs to do something bold in order to set his Batman film apart from previous iterations, and a good way to do that would be to include a villain we've never seen before. Hush is a solid choice because he challenges both Batman and Bruce Wayne in ways that his other villains don't. It’s not only a strong personal story for the Bat, but also explores the world around him, and with the greater universe around Batman now established, it's a perfect story for the DCEU to tackle. JLA: The Tower Of Babel Presuming Justice League does well in November, we can probably expect many sequels to pop out in the future. Once they wrap up the Darkseid arc that they seem to be building toward, the next thing the studio tackles should be the acclaimed "Tower of Babel" storyline. In it, Batman is at his most paranoid. It’s revealed that he has intricate failsafes designed to kill or incapacitate every single Justice League member by exploiting their weaknesses, whether it be mental or physical. Of course, that information falls into the wrong hands and the League is practically wiped out. Not only would this present a great challenge for every League member to face, but it would also cause an intense rift between Batman and the rest of the heroes. Sure, he developed ways to kill all of them, but is he wrong to have that in case they go rogue? The entire DCEU is built on the idea that the world is sort of afraid of these super-powered beings, which leads to the establishment of the Suicide Squad. It’s that sort of depth that these DCEU movies should strive to have, not only because it gives them edgier material to work with, but also because the idea of Batman kicking every hero's butt is basically a dream come true. All-Star Superman If there’s one constant criticism that's been levelled at the DCEU’s interpretation of Superman, it's that he doesn’t feel very much like Superman. Now, we understand DC’s attempt to make Superman a little edgier to fit within today’s world, but it doesn’t mean we’re completely okay with it. If the studio wanted to make a story to really show a different side of the Man of Steel, they should go with All-Star Superman. Harkening back to the old days of truth, justice and the American way, the hero's injured by Lex Luthor in a way where he only has a year to live. Instead of moping about it or getting angry though, Superman uses the time he has left to help as many people as possible. It’s a great story as it gets to the heart of the character without being bogged down by angst or grit. We doubt we’ll ever see it be adapted, but it would be a good way to appease fans who've felt disappointed in Superman recently. If nothing else, we hope that Man of Steel 2 will at least pull elements from it, showing Supes as the symbol of hope and salvation he's supposed to be. Kraven’s Last Hunt Not only one of the best Spider-Man storylines, "Kraven’s Last Hunt" is one of the best overall comic storylines. It shows the villainous Kraven the Hunter traveling to New York to have one last battle with Spider-Man. He’s successful in that he ends up shooting the hero and burying him in a grave, seemingly killing him. Kraven then dons a copy of Spidey’s suit and spends weeks fighting crime, looking to prove himself superior in every way. Of course, Spider-Man isn’t dead. Kraven only shot him with a tranquilizer dart and as such, he awakens in the grave angry and desperate to get out. When he hunts down Kraven, the hunter doesn’t fight back, having already proven his superiority. By accomplishing everything he needed to do, he then returns home and kills himself. It’s an incredibly dark storyline, and even though it’s heralded as one of the greats, we’ll probably never see it played out in live-action. We’ll most likely see Kraven on the big screen sooner rather than later, but the true depth of his character will probably remain unexplored, which is just a darn shame. Astonishing X-Men If there’s one character that deserves a better on-screen interpretation, it’s Cyclops. Although casual movie fans can be forgiven for thinking he's just an obstacle for Wolverine in a cheesy love triangle, comic fans know the truth. Cyclops is supposed to be one of the main characters in X-Men, but his time on the big screen has seen him play second fiddle to Wolverine and then killed off screen. It’s a huge disservice to him and a huge disappointment for fans. There are a lot of reasons why Joss Whedon’s X-Men comic storyline "Astonishing X-Men" should be adapted to the big screen, but the biggest one is how it places Cyclops front and center. It shows why he's a brilliant leader and strategist and absolutely deserves to be the face of the X-Men. Seeing this on the big screen will make you forget all about his awful interpretation in the original trilogy, trust us. Even if Cyclops isn't your cup of tea, there are a lot of other cool elements in Whedon's X-Men storyline, including a bit regarding a mutant cure. Yes, if the words "mutant cure" make your cringe because it causes horrible flashbacks to X-Men: The Last Stand, fear not! Whedon's incorporation of a mutant cure is actually well-written. Blackest Night When Ryan Reynold's failed Green Lantern movie disgraced our big screens, it seemed unlikely that we would ever get to explore the vast mythos of the character again. But with the DCEU firmly establishing that Lanterns are out there, it's time to look toward the future. With Green Lantern Corps coming in the next few years, it gives us plenty of time to speculate on what type of stories a series of Green Lantern films can tell. One that absolutely deserves to be adapted is the famous "Blackest Night" storyline, which sees an evil force known as Nekron reanimate dead superheroes with the goal of wiping out all life on earth. Maybe not enough heroes have died in the DCEU to truly give this arc the dramatic weight it deserves, but it’s one that would create a massive spectacle of world-ending proportions. It also examines the core concept of the Green Lantern corps and its relation with all the other corps in the universe. If they're looking for a story that opens up the mythos, then following "Blackest Night" would be the best way to go.
