This holiday was popularized by an early Parks and Recreation episode in which Poehler’s character Leslie Knope takes all of her gal pals out for a lovely meal and showers them with gifts and praise. It’s good to see this tradition is still holding strong, thirteen years after the episode aired:

This Galentine’s Day is all the more special, as 2023 is the inaugural year during which the holiday is officially recognized by the Merriam-Webster dictionary. That’s right, Galentine’s Day is official – having been added to the dictionary back in September 2022.

For the uninitiated (and per its dictionary entry), here is how Parks and Recreation’s Leslie Knope describes the wholesome day that is February 13th – Galentine’s Day:

What’s Galentine’s Day? Oh, it’s only the best day of the year. Every February 13th, my lady friends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.

The ladies of Parks and Recreation have certainly come a long way since capturing our hearts with the show’s seven-season run, Aubrey Plaza recently killed it on White Lotus, Kathryn Hahn is starring in Marvel’s Wandavision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos, Rashida Jones starred in the Apple TV original On the Rocks, and Amy Poehler is hitting the road with Tina Fey for a national comedy tour.

Poehler and company were certainly instrumental in popularizing the holiday, which is now being celebrated the world over, including by fellow Hollywood superstar Brie Larson
