Few things appear to frustrate a work crew more than a coworker who seems untouchable. In a Reddit post by u/2old2bThisDumb in r/AmItheAsshole, an electrician says they recently left their boss’s son asleep in a truck at a customer’s home, prompting the homeowner to wake the man after the crew left.
The situation reportedly began when the coworker, the business owner’s son, arrived at the jobsite two hours late. He apparently missed the morning meeting at the warehouse meant for loading trucks and showed up at the customer’s house in his own vehicle.
According to the electrician, the coworker smelled like alcohol and stood around briefly before climbing back into his truck. He then reportedly turned on the air conditioning and fell asleep while the rest of the crew continued the job.
The electrician admits leaving him there was a petty move
The rest of the crew finished the work, cleaned the area, and loaded their trucks to leave. The electrician says they saw that the boss’s son was still asleep but chose not to wake him before the team drove away. According to the electrician, the homeowner eventually discovered the sleeping man and woke him up.
This reportedly caused professional trouble for the electrician, who claims they were criticized as the company looked bad in front of the client. The electrician admitted the situation was embarrassing for everyone involved and described leaving the coworker behind as a petty, poorly thought-out decision.
The electrician also appears to recognize that waking the boss’s son likely would have kept the homeowner out of it, since the move made the entire company look bad. However, the electrician says they felt caught between being a professional worker and a babysitter for someone who was not pulling his weight.
The incident reportedly sparked a conversation about the boss’s son, whom the crew calls a nepo-helper. According to the electrician, many of the workers say they have been frustrated, as they work hard in the heat while he appears to get paid to do nothing. The fallout seemingly gave the staff a chance to speak up, which may have eased some of the tension.
When talking to the owner, the electrician says they acknowledged the poor optics and expressed regret that the homeowner had that experience. However, the electrician claims to have stood their ground, maintaining that the son’s mistakes were his alone. According to the electrician, the owner eventually seemed to agree once things cooled down.
The account comes only from the electrician’s post. The boss’s son’s side of the story could not be verified, and the homeowner does not appear to have shared their perspective either.
Commenters on the post appeared split, although many seemed to side with the electrician. “NTA. What are you supposed to tell your boss? That you should have woken his drunk son and let him drive home under the influence?” one commenter wrote. Another argued the boss should direct his anger at the unprofessional employee, since none of it was the electrician’s to fix.
Other users felt the electrician still carried some of the blame. “Obviously the boss’s son sucks the most, but leaving him there for the customer to find and wake up was also s—ty as it reflects badly on the company overall,” one wrote.
Workplace management has drawn attention in other viral posts, including one where a company hired a replacement for an employee but never actually fired them. That post reportedly described the employee being removed from all office channels while still on the payroll.
Homeowners have also shared their own frustrations about workers on their property, including one who reportedly left one-star Yelp reviews for salespeople who kept cutting across a lawn. The electrician now says leaving the coworker behind was a mistake.
