A driver in a white Infiniti SUV drove away after watching a Land Rover slide off a snowy cliff in Lake Tahoe. Dash camera footage from Christmas morning shows the Infiniti following closely behind a black Land Rover on the snow-covered Historic Highway 50. When the Land Rover suddenly went off the road, the Infiniti driver had to hit the brakes hard as the vehicle slid down the embankment.
According to the Daily Mail, the black SUV ended up hanging hundreds of feet above the ground with its wheels still spinning. But instead of stopping to help, the Infiniti driver simply continued down the road. Luckily, another driver was recording the whole thing and decided to help.
Air Force Staff Sgt. Ruben Tala quickly got out of his vehicle and ran to the overturned car. He found a couple trapped inside with their two small dogs. Soon after, a white truck and another SUV pulled over further down the road to help rescue the couple.
Multiple strangers worked together to save the trapped couple
Ruben asked one of the helpers to bring a rope. They tied it to the Land Rover to keep it stable and prevent it from falling further. At least five people worked together to carefully pull the driver and passenger out of the dangerous situation.
First responders showed up about 15 to 20 minutes later. Both people inside the vehicle were safely rescued with no injuries. The woman was visibly shaken and held her two dogs tightly after the rescue. Land Rover owners have been dealing with serious safety concerns at dealerships recently.
Tala said he felt his adrenaline kick in when he saw the Land Rover spinning out of control shortly after 8am. “I thought about my wife and my daughter,” he explained. “What if there’s a family in that car? Somebody has to help.”
His commander at Travis Air Force Base praised his quick thinking. Lt. Col. Jason Christie said Tala’s actions showed their core value of putting service before self. His wife Yvett also posted on social media about how proud she was of her husband.
Highway 50 is known for dangerous conditions during winter storms. Snow and ice make the road very risky even for experienced drivers. Earlier this year, three people were critically injured when a medical aircraft crashed onto the same busy highway near Lake Tahoe. If you’re worried about air travel safety, a Florida pilot’s advice on turbulence might help ease your concerns.
