Back on August 2nd, Bethesda told The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim PS3 players that they had run into some “performance” issues with the Dawnguard DLC on Sony’s console, and stated that they needed more time to solve the problem. Now, almost a month later, Bethesda is reporting that they may never get the add-on working properly on the PS3.

Bethesda’s Global Community Lead made the announcement on the company’s forums, saying:

“It’s been a few weeks, and we wanted to make sure everyone knows where we’re at with Dawnguard. Skyrim is a massive and dynamic game that requires a lot of resources, and things get much more complex when you’re talking about sizable content like Dawnguard. We have tried a number of things, but none of them solve the issue enough to make Dawnguard good for everyone. The PS3 is a powerful system, and we’re working hard to deliver the content you guys want. Dawnguard is obviously not the only DLC we’ve been working on either, so the issues of adding content get even more complicated. This is not a problem we’re positive we can solve, but we are working together with Sony to try to bring you this content.”

As someone who played/suffered through a huge chunk of Skyrim on the PS3 prior to the 1.4 patch, which fixed enough of the problems to make it playable, I can personally attest to the mess that it turned into after several hours of game time. Given that experience, I’m not at all surprised to hear that Bethesda is having trouble getting Dawnguard running on the PS3, as they have proven that they are borderline incapable of developing games for Sony’s console.

The fact that they are working with Sony on Dawnguard is a small ray of hope for those looking forward to the DLC, but I wouldn’t hold my breath for it. My guess is that even if it does manage to get released, it will only end up breaking the game all over again.
