While Captain America and Iron Man might have spent the last few years of the MCU at each other’s throats, the relationship between Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans has never been stronger. Their bromance has become one for the ages, with the pair alternately teasing and praising one another on social media. But now it seems that Downey Jr.’s respect for Evans led him to give his Avengers: Endgame co-star one hell of a gift.
Seen below is a customized 1967 Chevrolet Camaro. But not just any vintage Camaro. This is a custom-built Camaro featuring a steering wheel emblazoned with Captain America’s shield, a plaque explaining that the car’s a “Steve Rogers’ Special Edition,” and it also comes with high-end wheels, suspension, engine, seats, supercharger and custom gauges. The work was done by SpeedKore, who estimates that the bill for this gift was in the region of $275,000.
Even better, it sounds like the way Downey Jr. went about working out what kind of car Evans might want is outright adorable. In an interview with noted car-lover Jay Leno, Evans explained that he and Downey Jr. were walking the streets and he kept asking him whether he liked certain cars.
“In my head I’m like, ‘Is this guy going to give me a car? There’s no way he’s going to do this.’ And, then sure enough, I showed up on set one day and it was there” said Evans.
So, it really sounds like once you get into Robert Downey Jr.’s good books, you’re there for good. In an industry full of people stabbing each other in the back and false friendship, it’s refreshing to see two people who clearly love and respect one another to this level. Plus, the amount of care that went into customizing this gift specifically for Evans is really sweet.
If the rumors are true and Avengers: Endgame will be the actor’s last appearance in the MCU, let’s hope that this car can remind him of all the friends he made along the way for years to come.
