Donald Trump has given his “complete and total endorsement” to Benjamin Netanyahu ahead of next week’s election. Trump praised Netanyahu as a “great warrior prime minister” and a partner for peace, crediting him with joining the United States in launching strikes on Iran in February. The conflict has disrupted global energy markets and wreaked havoc across the Middle East, damaging critical infrastructure and destabilizing regional economies.
“What Country can survive when things such as this are allowed to be said, because eventually, they always end up being true? It would have been only a question of time until Iran would have put that ominous phrase into effect, but they have been systematically destroyed, both Militarily and Financially, and unless they change their ways, rapidly, we will soon finish the job,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He continued: “If Israel has the wrong Leader, which would be anyone other than Bibi, America will have to do this work ourselves, and I am not inclined to do so. Bibi Netanyahu has been Strong, Brave, and Brilliant in the face of tremendous opposition, including that coming from even Israel, itself. Despite all of that, he has endured and, in fact, he has thrived! I have watched Bibi under the most trying of times.” Trump went on to underline that: “BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”.
Netanyahu has a friend in Trump
Netanyahu thanked “his friend Donald” in a post on X. “President Trump, my friend Donald – thank you for your extraordinary endorsement. Israel has never had a greater friend in the White House. Together we will never let Iran’sregime get nuclear weapons. Thank you for your clarity, courage and unwavering support.”
Trump’s endorsement comes before Israel’s parliamentary election on Oct. 27, which will determine whether Netanyahu remains in power. This will be Israel’s first vote since the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which plunged the region into conflict as Israel responded by going to war in Gaza, Lebanon, and Iran.
In February, Israel joined the U.S. in launching coordinated strikes against Iran, killing Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Iran retaliated by lashing out at its regional neighbors, damaging critical infrastructure and halting traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump and Netanyahu have maintained close ties, although the U.S. president reportedly had a heated call with the Israeli prime minister over concerns that Israel’s recent escalation against Hezbollah was disproportionate. Trump reportedly told Netanyahu, “You’re f—ing crazy,” and then added, “You’d be in prison if it weren’t for me. I’m saving your a–. Everybody hates you now. Everybody hates Israel because of this.”
Netanyahu’s right-wing Likud Party is trailing former IDF chief of staff Gadi Eisenkot’s Yashar Party by a couple of points in polls (per Haaretz). Netanyahu’s popularity has declined due to the ongoing conflicts, and public support for Trump has also waned among Israelis.
