The first teaser for the upcoming documentary Musk has finally arrived, offering a brief look at the polarizing figure through the lens of director Alex Gibney. This 48-second clip sets the stage for a deep dive into the life of Elon Musk.
The documentary is scheduled to have its world premiere at the 83rd Venice International Film Festival on September 8, followed by a showing at the Toronto International Film Festival, Variety reported. The film carries a nearly four-hour running time. Talking Heads frontman David Byrne wrote and performed an original track for the film titled “Let Me Sell You a Dream.”
The teaser itself is a rapid montage of spacecraft and complex astronautical hardware. While the visuals are impressive, the audio is what really grabs your attention. It starts with high praise, featuring voices that claim, “He’s possibly the greatest living inventor. He is the real-life Iron Man. He is one of the greatest builders of all time.”
The film aims to explore the extreme spectrum of public opinion surrounding Elon Musk
The backtrack continues by saying, “He is the greatest capitalist in history. He’s chaotic, random, capricious, manifestly cruel and selfish. He’s a fascist.” The short video ends on a dramatic note with a voice declaring, “Elon is a nuke,” just as a spacecraft hits the ground, implodes, and bursts into flames.
This project has been in the works for a while, as Gibney first shared that he had started production back in March 2023. He noted at the time that he was already many months into the process. The announcement sparked a quick interaction on X, where Musk predicted it would be “a hit piece.” Gibney responded on X by asking, “How would you know?”
The team behind this production is extensive. Gibney is directing and producing the film alongside Jessie Deeter and Erin Edeiken for Jigsaw Productions. They are joined by Dana O’Keefe for Double Agent, Joey Marra and Zhang Xin for Closer Media, and Nick Shumaker and Jessica Grimshaw for Anonymous Content. The production team is rounded out by Ronan Farrow and Lawrence Wright.
