Elon Musk has quietly funneled more than $276 million into Republican groups and his own super PAC since the start of July, the New York Times reports. This massive injection of capital marks him as the largest known donor in the midterm elections, a move intended to bolster the Republican Party as it faces significant headwinds.
These figures, which were previously unreported, were supplied by representatives for Musk before a federal filing deadline on Thursday. While he previously claimed in May 2025 that he would do a lot less in terms of political spending, this new wave of funding suggests he is positioning himself as a major player for the 2028 presidential election as well.
A significant portion of this money is aimed at protecting the Republican majority in the Senate. Musk provided $158 million to the Senate Leadership Fund over the summer. This donation is one of the largest in American history and actually exceeds the amount raised by the group’s Democratic rival from all of its donors during that same quarter.
Beyond that, Mr. Musk has leaned heavily into his own organization, America PAC, which he founded in 2024
Musk donated over $76 million to the group this summer to fund a sprawling canvassing operation. This program is currently active in seven Senate battlegrounds and nearly three dozen House races. According to officials with the group, they have already deployed nearly 3,000 paid canvassers and have knocked on about 6.5 million doors across the country.
The rhetoric behind this spending is intense. Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for America PAC, stated, “If Democrats take control of Washington and win key gubernatorial and attorney general races this November, then America risks becoming a socialist, woke and borderless country.” He added, “These robust investments have allowed the G.O.P. apparatus to get its message out so Republicans can have a fighting chance to defy history.”
A major focus of this spending is the Senate race in Texas. Musk, who resides in Austin, has directed over a third of his America PAC spending toward this specific contest. This includes a $10 million donation to the Lone Star Liberty PAC, which supports the Republican nominee for Senate, Ken Paxton. This contribution was particularly critical, as it arrived when the candidate was being significantly outspent.
While Musk is spending heavily, his personal involvement looks different than it did during the 2024 election. He is taking a more hands-off approach, entrusting major decisions to his top adviser, Chris Young. He has not been making campaign stops or engaging in the kind of high-profile antics seen previously.
Although he and President Trump appear to be on good terms again, with the President calling him “our modern-day Thomas Edison” on Thursday, Musk seems more focused on his business empire than he was during the last cycle.
