Florida man fishes millions of dollars out of the ocean and hands it straight to police. The internet is not impressed with his decision

When the ocean gives, just take it.

A Florida man found millions of dollars washed up on a beach in Fort Lauderdale and, instead of keeping it, he called the police. Several videos of the incident have surfaced online, showing the man, identifiable only by his bright red shorts, picking up a bundle of cash and bringing it ashore. He reportedly was not sure what it was at first, thinking it might be drugs because of the way it was packaged.

The videos have racked up millions of views on social media, with many viewers sharing what they would do in the same situation. According to Dexerto. Some people think he made the right call, pointing to the risk of getting caught. “Broad daylight, too many witnesses, someone even recording you. Not seeing a lot of ways to get away with this one,” one social media user said.

Others, however, are not so understanding. One user noted, “Ugh why this can’t ever happen to me.” Another joked, “Always…ALWAYS walk South beach first thing in the morning. You’re welcome.” While some praised him, others called him out for being a “snitch.” The story quickly divided people online, with strong opinions on both sides of the debate.

Turning in the money was actually the legally right thing to do in Florida

According to Florida law, the man did exactly what he was supposed to do. As Daily Dot pointed out, the state requires anyone who finds lost or abandoned property to report it to local law enforcement right away, or risk being charged with theft. So while the internet may not be impressed, the law was clearly on his side.

The man’s identity remains unknown. This is not the first time a Florida man chose honesty over a surprise windfall, a Florida construction worker who found a misplaced fortune made a similar decision that turned out to be far more meaningful than just keeping the cash.

No one knows his name or what he did for the rest of the day after handing over the cash. But the story has sparked a wider conversation about what most people would actually do if they stumbled upon millions of dollars in broad daylight, with cameras rolling and witnesses all around. It is the kind of scenario that sounds like something out of a movie, yet it played out on a real beach with real consequences.

The reality is that keeping the money would not have been as simple as it sounds. With so many people filming and watching, walking away with a bundle of cash would have been extremely difficult without drawing attention. The risks of facing criminal charges would have been very real, and the idea of secretly holding onto millions of dollars in found cash is far more complicated in practice than most people imagine.

Florida law is also quite strict when it comes to found property. Anyone who knowingly keeps lost or abandoned property without reporting it can face theft charges, regardless of how the property came to be in their possession. That legal reality changes the calculation significantly for anyone who might otherwise be tempted to pocket a lucky find.

Still, the internet remains divided. Many people feel that finding that much money and simply handing it over, without even knowing for sure what it was, is hard to understand. Florida has been in the news for other shocking stories too, including a case where a Florida woman stabbed her teen sister multiple times over a phone dispute, drawing widespread outrage over the sentence she received.

Whether he is seen as honest or just naive, this Florida man has become a talking point across social media. He will likely be remembered not as someone who got rich, but as the person who pulled millions of dollars out of the ocean and walked straight to the police with it.
