Former ‘American Idol’ contestant is sentenced in his wife’s murder. Prosecutors said he staged the crime scene

A former American Idol contestant is facing life imprisonment.

Caleb Flynn is a former American Idol contestant who appeared on the 12th season of the show in 2013, in which Candice Glover was crowned the winner. Flynn is 40-years-old old and living in Ohio as a former pastor. He seemed to gain success after the show, but not for the right reasons.

Flynn was found guilty of murdering his wife, a 37-year-old woman named Ashley Flynn. He staged the crime scene to make it look like someone broke into the house and fatally shot his wife, according to ABC News.

The court found him guilty of aggravated murder and multiple counts of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence. The jury had a long, 2.5-hour evaluation of the case before reaching a verdict that found him guilty on all charges. He will receive life imprisonment without parole as punishment.

There were signs of manipulation

Prosecutors in this case alleged that Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she was in bed so that he could be with his mistress. He then made a distress call to 911 reporting that his wife had been shot by an intruder in their home in Tripp City, north of Dayton.

As the song that Flynn wrote for his wife was played in the court, he looked visibly uncomfortable, as seen in a video posted on X. The defendant kept looking down, while those in the courtroom can be seen giving out smirks and covering their mouths with their hands to hide their smiles.

As the arguments came to a close, the Miami County Assistant Prosecutor Matthew Joseph directed everyone’s attention to the evidence. There was a side garage door at the crime scene that was made to look as if an intruder had damaged it.

The digital evidence, such as the conversation between him and his mistress from the night of the shooting, also “leads straight to the defendant,” and the evidence does not “tell the story of an intruder.” Due to Caleb Flynn’s popularity, the case also received attention within mainstream media.

“The evidence showed that being the victim would allow the defendant to keep his lucrative job working for Ashley’s family business, he would benefit from Ashley’s life insurance, and he could keep his position as a working worship leader with zero impact to his reputation within the church,” he said. However, the Defense attorney Patrick Mulligan argued that the state’s evidence is circumstantial; the fact that Flynn was having an affair was the only thing they could prove through it.
