‘Got it done’: Ben Stiller was live-posting a Knicks playoff win. MAGA thought he was celebrating an assassination attempt on Trump

Rage posting without context.

Ben Stiller‘s latest social media post sent MAGA into a frenzy, with some supporters misinterpreting a three-word message as a reaction to a shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner. In reality, Stiller was simply celebrating a big win for the New York Knicks.

Stiller, a longtime Knicks fan, was live-posting his reactions on X as Game 4 of the Knicks’ playoff series against the Atlanta Hawks wrapped up at 8:53 p.m. ET. The Knicks won the road game, evening their playoff series. That’s when Stiller shared a brief message with his followers: “Got it done.”

According to The Daily Beast, some MAGA supporters jumped to conclusions, thinking that Stiller’s post was a reaction to the shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, which had taken place only minutes earlier.

Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ric Grenell, and others publicly misread Stiller’s post and attacked him without checking the facts

The event was being held at the Washington Hilton and was abruptly evacuated after shots rang out outside the ballroom. Donald and Melania Trump, along with top Cabinet officials, were forced to drop to the ground and evacuate. The suspected gunman, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen, was stopped after rushing past a security checkpoint.

Rep. Nancy Mace, Rep. Ric Grenell, and others took to X to express their outrage, misinterpreting Stiller’s post as a reaction to the shooting. Some even escalated their criticism, calling Stiller a “vile human” and a “little whiny b—h.”

Stiller appeared unfazed by the backlash, posting a salute emoji the following morning. This is not the first time the MAGA base has turned on public figures over perceived slights, often without verifying the facts first.

X later added Community Notes to posts by Mace and Grenell, clarifying the context: “He was rooting on the Knicks to win their game against the Atlanta Hawks. (They did, by the way.)” Stiller then leaned back into the celebration, replying to a post from the New York Knicks’ official account, which asked fans about their mood after the victory, with three fire emojis.

The shooting at the White House Correspondents’ dinner happened at around 8:44 p.m. ET, just minutes before Stiller posted his message at 8:53 p.m. ET, which is what led some to connect the two events despite there being no actual link between them. The incident comes at a time when major MAGA figures are clashing over Trump’s direction, adding to the growing tensions within the movement.

Stiller has not issued any formal statement addressing the backlash or the misinterpretation directly, but his salute emoji and fire emojis in response to the Knicks’ account made his actual intentions clear enough.
