Grocery store supervisor says customer turned down help ringing up red bell peppers. Then decided to glared at him as he helped others

He refused help, then lost to a bell pepper.

Self-checkout machines are supposed to speed up a grocery run, yet one vegetable apparently keeps tripping shoppers up. A grocery store supervisor claims a customer refused help at the self-checkout, then spent several minutes struggling with red bell peppers before walking out empty-handed. The supervisor, who posts as u/Electrical-Pin9354, shared the story in the r/MaliciousCompliance community on Reddit.

The supervisor said the job mostly involves putting out tiny fires and keeping the store moving. According to the post, the customer arrived on an electric bike and appeared to struggle to ring up some red bell peppers. The supervisor claimed these peppers seem to confuse self-checkout users constantly, as the produce lookup reportedly gives many people trouble.

The supervisor reportedly walked over to offer help, hoping to get him through the self-checkout quickly. However, the offer was barely out before he allegedly said, “I didn’t ask for your help. I don’t need your help.” The supervisor said they replied, “Okay,” and turned back to other duties.

The supervisor really did take him at his word

Normally, the supervisor said, they would circle back to anyone who seemed to be struggling. However, the customer had apparently made his position perfectly clear, so the supervisor decided to respect his wishes very, very thoroughly. Over the next several minutes, they reportedly helped other shoppers and fixed register errors while the customer kept fighting the red bell peppers.

The man apparently kept trying different options on the self-checkout screen, but nothing seemed to work. He reportedly looked around the store and then stared directly at the supervisor, who claimed he was glaring daggers the entire time. The supervisor said the reaction was confusing as they were doing exactly what he had requested.

At one point, the supervisor reportedly helped another customer a few feet away. The customer allegedly watched the interaction, and the supervisor said they could practically feel his eyes drilling into the side of their head. The standoff appears similar to another grocery worker’s account of a shopper who silently glared at a cashier over a missing spice.

Eventually, the man apparently decided that accepting help would be worse than abandoning the purchase. He reportedly left the self-checkout, walked out of the store, and rode away on his electric bike. The supervisor said they then walked over to the terminal, looked at the unfinished transaction, and voided the order.

The supervisor still seems baffled by the glaring, suggesting the man may have expected them to ignore his instructions and rescue him anyway. “I’m a supervisor, not a mind reader,” the original poster wrote.

Commenters on the post appeared to side with the supervisor. One user suggested the man likely wanted someone to blame. “People will always hold you accountable for not reading their minds,” One wrote. Another user suggested the man may have wanted a second offer so he could take his frustration out on the employee.
