Groom-to-be allegedly backs out of bachelor trip after his friends ask him to do one thing he couldn’t agree to: ‘Different stages of life’

Groom cancels bachelor trip over safety fears.

Bachelor trips are usually planned well in advance so that a late change can strain even close friendships. A 30-year-old man reportedly canceled his bachelor trip to Sikkim just one week before departure after his friends refused to change plans despite dangerous weather conditions, according to a Reddit post by u/__quietobserver in r/AmItheAsshole.

The groom-to-be, who says he has lived with his girlfriend for around 10 years, found himself at odds with two friends he has known for 15 years. The group had apparently agreed to pick a new destination if the weather turned. However, the friends allegedly ignored landslide reports and insisted on sticking to the original plan.

The friction may run deeper than one bachelor trip, as his priorities have shifted since the group spent their teenage years drinking and smoking. He says he has cut back on his habits to focus on his career and finances. He says he does not judge their lifestyle, though they appear to be at “different stages of life.”

His friends allegedly told him to lie to his girlfriend and go anyway

The tension reportedly reached a breaking point when the weather in Sikkim worsened. When the man suggested changing the destination to avoid potential landslides, his friends allegedly labeled him an overreactor and claimed his information was bogus. Even when he offered to pay for their bookings so no one lost money, they still refused to budge, he claims.

The situation worsened when they suggested he lie to his girlfriend and family about the trip, as both had strongly opposed him going. This dishonesty did not sit well with him. The man eventually decided to pull out of the bachelor trip entirely, as he was not comfortable with the risk.

The decision has left him worried about the future of his 15-year friendship, as he wonders if he may have caused permanent damage by prioritizing his safety over the group plans. He appears torn between feeling he made the responsible choice and questioning whether he was being too cautious.

Concerns about travel to Sikkim may not be unfounded, as the region has seen repeated landslides this year. The Indian Army launched Operation Him Setu to evacuate more than 1,000 tourists stranded in North Sikkim after landslides and a bridge collapse cut off road access.

Many commenters have backed his decision to prioritize safety. One commenter wrote, “NTA for backing out to protect yourself, but what do your friends’ party habits have to do with this situation?” However, the same person questioned why he framed his friends as less mature, adding, “I wonder if you just don’t like these people anymore.”

Another person pointed out the trade-off, writing, “Does it suck to possibly end a friendship over this? Yes. Would it suck more to be hit by a landslide? Also yes.” Most replies seem to side with the man, much like commenters backed a friend in a recent dispute over a newlywed’s group cabin trip photos. One commenter said, “Real friends do not pressure you to risk your life or lie to your partner. You just outgrew them.”
