While Game of Thrones makes a welcome return to our screens this week, HBO is already teasing its upcoming slate of programming by releasing 3 trailers. Two small teasers for two of their biggest shows and one longer trailer for a new show that is shaping up to be the TV event of the year. Let’s start with the two shorter trailers, one for the fifth season of True Blood and the other the third season of Boardwalk Empire.

Firstly, True Blood. I haven’t followed the show since the first season but I was impressed with it on the base level that it was a proper vampire tale, brimming with sex and violence that usually beleaguer the whole vampiric legend but were dealt with really interestingly in this show. The brief glimpse given here looks to continue that and if you’re a fan of the show I imagine this is exactly what you want. Apparently this will also be Alan Ball‘s final year as the showrunner, so make sure you tune in as I predict he will go out on a bang.

Secondly, HBO offers a more simplistic but arguably more atmospheric teaser with Boardwalk Empire, which will be entering its third season this year. Production will have only recently begun, hence not much in the way of new footage. What we get through stills and snippets of dialogue are hints towards the direction the show will take this year. The second season was truly excellent television, its last episode was breathtakingly unexpected and the power struggles between Nucky and other mob members were left slightly uncertain by the end. I can’t wait to see where they take it.

And last, but certainly not least, is the trailer for HBO’s new drama The Newsroom, which is for my most anticipated screen event this year. Big or small. From Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing and writer of The Social Network, the show follows a news anchor Will McAvoy, played by Jeff Daniels, seeking to bring good quality news to primetime America. Lovers of Sorkin should have no problem with what they see here, in 2 minutes the trailer gets across wit, drama and political tensions at work. If you’re not a Sorkin fan, this is not something that will win you over to him.

Also if you’re not a liberal and think Fox News is a trustworthy and valid information source then the trailer probably won’t make you happy either. This is clearly going to be a show filled to the brim with Sorkin’s trademark saber rattling credentials, to the point where a character reels off a list explaining why America isn’t the greatest country in the world, which you could easily imagine spilling out of Sorkin’s mouth. Truthfully, it looks really funny and Daniels appears to be on fire.

The Newsroom debuts on HBO on June 24th, catch the trailer beneath.
