Amid reports of dwindling health, the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter, has chosen to spend his remaining days at his home, surrounded by his family and loved ones. Whilst the exact nature of Carter’s illness is unknown, his family have released a statement explaining that he is “at peace” as his final days draw near. The former politician and humanitarian is the longest-living U.S. president to date at the age of 98 and he has a large family to support him at this time. But how many children does the former president have? And how large is his family now?
Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter are both staying at the family home in Plains, Georgia. The couple have been married for 77 years and have had four children together. Their first son, Jack Carter, was born in 1947. Jimmy had two more sons — James III, born in 1950 and Donnel, born in 1952 — followed by daughter Amy in 1967.
Jimmy’s first-born, Jack, went on to be a successful businessman and politician. He was the Democratic candidate for Nevada in 2006, although he lost out to the Republican candidate. Jack has had two children, Jason, a lawyer and former state senator for Georgia, and Sarah, an actor known for roles in TV series such as Smallville. Jason has also been updating the world via his Twitter on the condition of his grandfather. Both of Jimmy’s grandchildren have children of their own as well. Jason has two boys — Thomas and Henry — whilst Sarah has a daughter, Alice.
Jimmy Carter’s second son, James, is now a political consultant. He has two children – Margaret and James. Not much is known about the president’s grandchildren other than James IV leaking damning footage of Republican nominee Mitt Romney during the 2012 presidential election.
Donnel Carter did not go into politics but he did found a computer company and has been very successful. Donnel has three children – Joshua, Jeremy, and you guessed it, another James. Sadly his middle son, Jeremy, died in 2015, he was found unresponsive after taking a nap. The other two siblings are currently alive and well.
Lastly, Jimmy Carter’s daughter — Amy Carter — is currently 55 years old and has been known for her political activism over the years. She has one son, Hugo, who is 23 years old – not much is known about what he is currently doing.
Jimmy Carter’s family is large, it’s likely that many of his grandchildren and great grandchildren have intentionally kept out of the spotlight so there could be more members of his family who we don’t know about. In case you haven’t been keeping count, Jimmy Carter has four children, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Although his final days may be drawing near, there is comfort in the fact that the 98-year-old has a large and loving family to be with him during this time.
