Incredibles 2 Has Already Set Its First Record

It would appear that the near decade and a half wait for Incredibles 2 was well worth the lengthy delay. Earlier this week, the Tomatometer was unveiled, and although it has since dipped a percent or two from their first outing, the Parr family is once again certified fresh, currently to the tune of 95%. With critical acclaim in the bag, yesterday we learned that the highly-anticipated sequel is also now headed for a record-breaking opening.

According to Deadline, should “the confidence out there from rivals” hold true, Incredibles 2 could haul in somewhere between $135M-$150M at the domestic ticket booth this weekend, earning it the largest opening for an animated feature, a title presently held by another Disney/Pixar joint: Finding Dory ($135M). While the final box office figure for the Parr family reunion won’t arrive until Sunday, at the earliest, managing editor of Fandango, Erik Davis, has divulged that, in the meantime, “Incredibles 2 is already making history as our top animated pre-seller of all time.”

That’s right; when it bows at over 4,400 locations in North America tomorrow, Incredibles 2 will do so as Fandango’s top animated pre-seller, a record previously held, coincidentally enough, by the aforementioned Finding Dory. Given the lack of competition at the box office this week, with the Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) led-Tag slated as the primary challenger, we fully expect a strong opening from Incredibles 2.

That said, it’ll be tough sledding for the Parr family next weekend when Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom stomps into theaters, which, despite a divisive reception, should trounce all competition with ease. Nevertheless, for those who stood idly by as Bird ventured into Tomorrowland, Friday can’t come soon enough.
