JD Vance tells crowd his 4-year-old daughter tried to donate her brothers’ toys to charity. Then jokes to the rally: ‘Raised a Democrat’

Vance wrapped up his campaign travel in Rome, New York

Vice President JD Vance closed out his campaign travel on Monday with a stop in Rome, New York, where he told supporters a short story about preparing for a family holiday toy drive, according to Mediaite. The 4-year-old daughter, he said, responded by handing over two toys that belonged to her brothers. Vance then told the crowd he had apparently raised a Democrat.

He opened the anecdote by mentioning the costume he wore over the weekend. Dressed as Dumbledore for Halloween, he remarked that he looked more like an Iranian sheikh than the vice president. From there he shifted to Christmas plans and the annual donation effort.

Vance recounted the exchange with his daughter this way: “Honey, we will start getting ready for our toy drive. We try to give some toys to Toys for Tots. We get ready for Christmas and I want you to identify a couple of toys you would like to donate here.” He said she came back with two of her brothers’ toys.

Donation rules at Toys for Tots require new items only

The charity’s website states that it accepts only new and unwrapped toys. That means the items the daughter selected would not have qualified even if they had been brought to the drive. Vance, who recently got heckled over the Epstein files in a rally, used the moment to deliver the line that followed.

He continued, “And I realize that despite my best efforts, ladies and gentlemen, I have apparently raised a Democrat. Stealing – stealing her brother’s toys to give to somebody else, and that’s what we have to do in just one day is beat the Democrats and win for America.” The joke tied the family story directly to the election the next day.

In recent weeks, Vance has joined President Donald Trump on a busy schedule of rallies. Those events have included remarks about men’s butts, a fireworks story, and moments when hecklers moved within a few feet of the vice president. Monday’s appearance in Rome was presented as the last of the cycle.

The vice president described asking his daughter to choose a couple of toys for Toys for Tots after Halloween ended. He noted that the family starts getting ready for Christmas and the donation drive at that point. The detail about the brothers’ toys became the setup for the political punch line he delivered to the New York crowd.

Vance presented the entire exchange as something that happened the day before the rally. He framed the daughter’s choice as the reason he concluded he had raised a Democrat despite his efforts. The comments stayed focused on the toy-drive conversation and the need to win the midterms. Also, it was apparently not his first parenting anecdote to go viral, following his 5-year-old’s church meltdown story.
