Marvel Grants First Look Inside Journey To Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma #1

The cool thing about Star Wars comics is that they've done a fine job of enriching the universe generations of fans have come to love, a trend that has continued since Marvel scooped up the publishing rights. Aside from adaptations such as Rogue One, the comics often explore territory the movies just don't have time to chart, effectively filling in some much needed gaps. A recent example of this is the newly launched Darth Vader series that branches the events of the first two trilogies (you can read our five-star review here).

The cool thing about Star Wars comics is that they’ve done a fine job of enriching the universe that generations of fans have come to love, a trend that’s continued since Marvel scooped up the publishing rights.

Aside from adaptations such as Rogue One, the comics often explore territory the movies just don’t have time to chart, effectively filling in some much needed gaps. A recent example of this is the newly launched Darth Vader series that branches the events of the first two trilogies (you can read our five-star review here).

Actually, I wouldn’t hesitate to put the focus of today’s conversation in the same category as the aforementioned Vader series because, like it, Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma aims to connect some dots. But what makes this especially exciting is that it’s leading into a movie nobody has seen yet, which you probably inferred from the book’s title. Suffice it to say, this may very well be considered required reading before venturing to the theatre later this year.

The creators working on this book should be somewhat familiar to those taking an interest: writer Kelly Thompson (Hawkeye, Star Wars Annual) and artist Marco Checchetto (Star Wars: Shattered Empire, Star Wars: Screaming Citadel). And if merely mentioning their names didn’t instill enough confidence in you, then you should definitely check out the gallery at the top because saying Checchetto’s interiors are impressive is a massive understatement.

Here’s what Thompson had to say about this four-issue miniseries:

“The Star Wars films, with so many fantastic characters, obviously can’t be a ‘Phasma story,’ and it’s especially cool that Phasma is getting explored in depth in both her forthcoming novel and comic book. The most exciting thing to me about our mini-series is that we were given the awesome responsibility of bridging a gap between Force Awakens and Last Jedi – of answering the question of what happened to Phasma after she went into that trash chute. Anytime you get to write official Star Wars is pretty incredible, but getting to decide what that link is, for a super intriguing character in some of the most epic movies of all time, is next level!”

Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Captain Phasma #1 is slated to arrive in comic shops this September. Will you be picking it up? Let us know in the usual place!
