There’s certainly no denying all that Netflix has accomplished in recent years. Aside from producing original movies and TV series, the streaming giant completely changed the game when it came to how the average person consumes entertainment in the comfort of their own home. Just ask Blockbuster Video, which has since become but a memory from my youth.
Not content to rest on their laurels, it seems as though the company is looking to expand into other forms of media, namely comic books, toys and other collectibles. It probably hasn’t escaped them that tie-in comics are becoming big business (case in point, The Great Wall: Last Survivor) and they likely want a piece of that pie. Most recently, a digital comic was released that expanded upon one of its original movies in the form of Spectral: Ghosts of War, so perhaps that helped in motivating them to take the extra step.
Bloomberg recently sniffed out a job posting on Netflix’s site searching for someone to oversee this endeavor. Here’s an excerpt:
“We are pursuing consumer products and associated promotion because we believe it will drive meaningful show awareness/buzz with more tangible, curated ways to interact with our most popular content. We want licensed merchandise to help promote our titles so they become part of the zeitgeist for longer periods of time.”
It should be noted that one such test has been conducted with Hot Topic, a retailer that recently sold various goods pertaining to cultural phenomenon Stranger Things. Something tells us that the coming months may see even more wares based off Netflix properties in not only Hot Topic, but perhaps in the adult collector’s aisle at Toys R Us and other major chains.
