A key US House panel voted to hold Bill and Hillary Clinton in contempt of Congress after they refused to comply with subpoenas related to the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. The Republican-led House Oversight Committee approved the contempt measure, which now moves to the full House of Representatives for a floor vote.
The vote wasn’t purely along party lines. Nine Democrats joined Republicans to approve the contempt resolution for Bill Clinton, while three Democrats voted to hold Hillary Clinton in contempt. If the full House passes this, the matter goes directly to the Department of Justice for potential misdemeanor charges.
The consequences could be serious. According to BBC, those found in contempt could face fines up to $100,000 and up to a year in prison for refusing to provide testimony in this investigation into convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
This case highlights the ongoing struggle for transparency in the Epstein investigation
Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer urged the full House to act, stating his committee sent “a clear message” that “no one is above the law, and justice must be applied equally, regardless of position, pedigree, or prestige.” The move comes as Trump addresses Congress on other issues.
The Clintons are fighting back against the committee’s action. Their lawyers called the legal orders “unenforceable” and said they already provided the “limited information” they have about Epstein. They claim the subpoenas are “nothing more than a ploy to attempt to embarrass political rivals, as President Trump has directed.”
The attorneys also argued the legal orders were “untethered to a valid legislative purpose, unwarranted because they do not seek pertinent information, and an unprecedented infringement on the separation of powers.” They said they communicated “proactively and voluntarily” with the committee.
The committee’s interest in Bill Clinton comes from photographs showing him with Epstein in the 1990s and early 2000s. Survivors of Epstein’s abuse have never accused Bill Clinton of wrongdoing, and he denies having any knowledge of Epstein’s sex offending. Meanwhile, Republican congressional candidates make controversial statements about other political matters.
The Justice Department recently released photos after Congress passed a law requiring the agency to release material related to Epstein investigations. One picture shows the former president swimming in a pool, and another shows him lying on his back in what looks like a hot tub. His spokesman, Angel Ureña, pointed out these pictures are decades old and that Clinton stopped associating with Epstein long before his crimes became public knowledge.
