‘Page one, dude’: Critics of DC’s new ‘Superman’ series don’t seem to have read any comic books

This is delete-your-account level embarrassing.

After so many disastrous DC projects it’s a little surreal to get something that’s actually good. Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios’ My Adventures with Superman has updated the classic hero’s mythos with a heaping helping of anime flair, as well as boasting the vocal talents of The Boys star Jack Quaid as the Man of Steel and Alice Lee as Lois Lane.

But this is the internet, and while the reception to the opening two-parter last week has been extremely positive there will always be perpetually grumpy comic-book fans with a bone to pick. But one bone? Well let’s just say it’s hilariously off base:

It’s almost cliche to point out that many of those angriest about comic book movies and TV shows haven’t actually read the original comics. Even so, not knowing that one of Superman’s fundamental powers is super-speed is a delete-your-account level embarrassing.

Perhaps we can cut them a little slack as this particular scene does lean into The Flash-style powers with the lightning effects, but it’s still an incredibly silly criticism to make.

With the opening two-parter out of the way, we’re very much looking forward to the rest of the season, especially seeing Superman really cut loose with his powers in this dazzling anime aesthetic. Eight more episodes will air weekly on Adult Swim over the next few months, though as a two-season order was placed when production began we’ll likely see more of the show in 2024.

My Adventures with Superman airs on Adult Swim each Friday.
