Pilot allegedly stops boarding to tell passengers what happened on the previous flight. Then he gives them one disgusting choice: ‘Democracy’

The second option wasn't that cracked up to be either.

A flight delay is frustrating enough, but passengers on one flight reportedly faced an unusual choice after a dog urinated inside the aircraft. Instead of immediately arranging a cleanup, the pilot apparently asked travelers whether they wanted to wait for the cabin to be cleaned or continue their journey with the smell lingering.

TikTok user Jen Coffey (@jencoffey) shared a video of the incident. Although Coffey clarified that it was not her flight, she said the pilot came out and explained that a dog had relieved itself during the previous flight. “Not my flight but a pilot just came out and announced that a dog had relieved himself on the plane during the last flight and he could either order a cleaning or depart on time with the cabin smelling like dog urine,” Coffey wrote in the video’s caption.

She added that the pilot asked for a “show of hands” to get an estimate of “how many passengers just wanted to deal with the smell to get home on time.” She jokingly called the process “Democracy!”

Pets are allowed on flights

The video shows several passengers raising their hands, although Coffey did not reveal which option ultimately won the vote. The incident has also brought attention to the growing debate over how frequently people bring dogs into public spaces, including places where other customers have little choice but to share the environment.

Airlines generally have specific requirements for passengers traveling with pets. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, “many airlines allow only cats and dogs to fly onboard their aircraft as pets and will not carry brachycephalic (short-nosed) breeds due to breathing risks.” Individual airlines can also impose their own age, size, and other travel restrictions.

Service animals are treated differently under federal rules. However, the DOT does not classify therapy animals or emotional support animals as service animals for air travel. Airlines may require passengers traveling with service dogs to complete a DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form, which includes information about the animal’s health, training, and behavior.

Importantly, the form requires passengers to attest that their dog will not urinate or defecate on the aircraft or in the gate area. That requirement is intended to ensure service animals can behave appropriately during travel, although accidents can still happen.

There are also concerns about people misrepresenting pets as service animals. A 2019 survey by Assistance Dogs International found that more than 90% of surveyed service-dog teams had encountered animals they considered fake, questionable, or uncontrolled. However, an accident alone does not establish that an animal was falsely presented as a service dog. Even a properly trained dog can become sick, stressed, or unable to control its bladder in an unfamiliar environment.
