Resident escapes a California home and calls 911. Deputies find a former deputy police chief, her daughter and her husband dead inside

The unknown caller made it out of the house.

Ann Mannix spent decades with the San Francisco Police Department and became the first woman to join and lead its SWAT team. The retired deputy chief, 65, was found dead inside a home in Strawberry, near Mill Valley, alongside her daughter Katie and her husband, retired SFPD Sgt. Kevin Mannix, according to Fox News.

Deputies with the Marin County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call reporting a shooting at about 5 p.m. Sunday. The caller had safely exited the home. However, deputies found three people dead once they went inside. The preliminary investigation points to a double murder-suicide, with Kevin Mannix, 68, identified as the suspected shooter.

Miguel Almaguer, a public information officer for the sheriff’s office, said deputies set up a small perimeter around the home before making entry. The department said there was no ongoing threat to the community. Authorities also confirmed there had been no previous calls for service at the address.

Ann Mannix was breaking barriers long before she made deputy chief

A fourth-generation San Franciscan, Ann was promoted to lieutenant in 2003, captain in 2009 and commander in 2015 before becoming deputy chief in 2018. She also led the department’s field operations and special operations bureaus before retiring in 2021. Kevin Mannix spent 27 years with the department before retiring in 2018.

Lou Barberini, a San Francisco police officer who knew the couple personally, described Ann as a highly capable officer. “Ann had a lot of talent, and she was very competent,” Lou Barberini said. He added that she was a great athlete and well liked within the department.

Away from policing, Ann coached youth basketball for the Catholic Youth Organization and sat on the board of the city’s Police Activities League. San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew said she served the department with honor and distinction. He added that he had been in touch with Marin County Sheriff Scardina as the investigation continues.

The San Francisco Police Officers Association addressed the deaths, as Ann and Kevin Mannix both spent decades in its ranks. President Louis Wong said the loss had left the SFPD family reeling. “There are no words that can fully capture the depth of this tragedy, nor are there simple answers to the painful questions we are all asking,” Louis Wong said.

Investigators have not disclosed a motive in the Mannix deaths. However, the couple was reportedly estranged, a detail that has surfaced in other recent domestic cases. As the investigation is in its early stages, the sheriff’s office has released few details about the person who called 911.

Investigators were waiting on a judge to approve a search warrant for a more thorough examination of the home, and autopsies for Ann Mannix, Katie, and Kevin Mannix were scheduled for Tuesday.
