NYC woman orders birthday cake for husband. Then she opens box and realizes bakery followed her decorating instructions a little too literally

It took a while for her husband to realize the mistakes on his cake.

A woman in New York City ordered a birthday cake for her husband, only to learn a bakery literally included her decorating instructions in the message written on his cake. Casting agent Chelsi Kern shared the hilarious blunder on Threads: she ordered a classic Fudgie the Whale ice cream cake from Carvel for her husband, Matthew Bennett. In the post, one image shows a receipt for the large Fudgie the Whale cake she purchased, with the instructions “RUN (BIG, all caps, creepy if possible)” written in pink frosting.

However, the second image showed the literal result, which read: “Run & Big, All Caps Creepy if Possiple.” What’s also funny is that the decorator had made some additional mistakes, such as spelling “possible” as “possiple.” Kern wrote: “[What] I asked them to write on my husband’s bday cake vs what we got.”

Kern followed up with another Threads post and shared that her “bestie” captured the moment they saw the cake. She “was wheezing so hard,” and she “literally collapsed.” It took Bennett a bit longer to catch on.

That honest mistake became a lighthearted moment on his birthday

Kern told TODAY.com that it took a while for her husband to realize the “Bless his heart, he does this cute little chuckle that he does when he wants to be polite but doesn’t really get it,” she said. “But then the more he read it and read it again, and I showed him the receipt. He was dying.”

A Carvel representative said the company reached out to Kern to make amends and deliver a cake that “makes the next occasion sweeter.” However, the bakery recognized it was a lighthearted moment for their customer. “While we recognize the cake Chelsi envisioned wasn’t delivered, we’re glad Chelsi and their husband were still able to find some joy in the moment,” Carvel tells TODAY.com.

Meanwhile, Kern says, “I’m glad it turned out the way that it did, and it’s brought so much joy.” Bennett shared that Fudgie the Whale cake has always been his favorite since he was a kid. “For a couple of years now, Chelsi’s been getting me a Fudgie the Whale cake for my birthday. It kind of came out of when I was a little kid. I was really into ‘Free Willy,’ so my parents got me a Fudgie the Whale cake.”

Kern says a lot of people have told them to call and ask for a refund, since the cake wasn’t as ordered. However, she didn’t mind the mishap at all. “No, this is hilarious. Because this happened, we have this deeply funny story that us and our friends are going to know forever,” Kern adds. “I think it’s easy to get mad and annoyed when mistakes happen, but it’s so much more fun to lean into it and find the joy in it.”
