‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ star preemptively dismisses harsh critics as ‘basement dwellers’

The 'Mario Bros.' movie isn't for middle-aged basement dwellers.

The internet can be a brutal place. Now that The Super Mario Bros. Movie is here, we’re sure there will be some harsh opinions on it, no matter how well it’s received by others. But Chris Pratt and Charlie Day are ready for the criticism from “basement dwellers.”

In an interview with Sky News, the pair discussed their excitement for their roles as Mario and Luigi in the film. Both grew up playing Mario as kids, and now, their kids are the ones playing Mario. There’s a lot of pressure to deliver to millions of passionate fans worldwide, although if the trailers are any indication, there will be plenty to keep fans happy.

However, Pratt and Day have praised the team behind the film, claiming that everyone involved was passionate about the content and making assurances fans wouldn’t be let down. When asked whether their kids would approve or criticize the movie, Day claimed his child would probably be fine with it — but that his harshest critic would likely be a basement dweller.

“I think my toughest critic is probably going to be some middle-aged man living in his basement somewhere. […] But I think my boy is going to be fine with it.”

The It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star is clearly very confident that the film will appeal to the masses. Day also valiantly defended his co-star, who has caught some flack from fans for his Mario accent.

“I think everyone, just wait to see the movie and make the decision afterwards because the guy does a fantastic job.”

Hopefully, Day is right about the Mario movie, and judging by how far video game adaptations have come recently — with notable examples like The Last of Us and Sonic The Hedgehog — it seems like he could be. We can live with a few upset basement dwellers, but could we live with the disappointment of another terrible Mario Bros. movie?
