President Donald Trump signed an executive order that aimed to bring down the rising fuel costs in the country, according to NBC News. The government allowed anyone to buy the ‘red dye’ diesel with a tax-exemption. The move came with mid-term elections scheduled to be held in November as Trump makes efforts to please his supporters who were highly upset with the sky-high diesel prices.
“Tonight I’m going to sign a historic executive order to officially waive the off-road requirement and allow anyone to purchase tax-free red dye diesel for any reason,” Trump said at a rally in Nebraska after he told the audience he didn’t “know what the hell” red dye diesel is.
Red dye diesel is basically intended for farm vehicles and machinery and is sold without tax. It is dyed red so inspectors and regulators can differentiate it from a regular road diesel. As diesel prices soared following the U.S.-Iran war, red dye fuel is still sold at comparatively cheaper prices due to the federal and state excise tax exemptions.
The fuel is available without any interests or penalties
Following the news, people took it as a positive move coming from the government. They mentioned that the move offers relief to farmers, while one user, Johnny Maga (@johnnymaga), posted on X that it will save people a fortune.
The Trump government was under intense pressure to do something about the rising fuel prices, which have increased by more than 30% in recent months. The federal diesel tax is 24.4 cents per gallon. The constant increase in cost had led to several global protests.
With this move by President Trump, truckers and farmers will be able to save up to $100 per fill. It will bring down the prices of food and groceries as the drivers can refuel at lower prices to ‘keep America moving,’ as mentioned in a fact sheet by the White House.
Trump also directed the secretaries of defense, transportation, agriculture, and Treasury to work on expanding access to tax-free diesel for the people. He also encouraged states to suspend their taxes on diesel supplies. The implementation is part of Trump’s affordability agenda that aims to offer relief to the masses across various sectors, including health care, food, and utility bills.
In another attempt to lower the fuel prices, the Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced earlier last month that the Transportation department will ease down the rules related to the number of consecutive hours fuel truck drivers can work. This temporary adjustment would last 90 days. Trump also vowed that oil prices will drop significantly after a win in the Iran war.
