Donald Trump has revealed how he would respond if Democrats take control of both House and Senate in the midterm elections. “I guess I’ll become Mr. Veto,” he told New York Post’s Miranda Devine on her “Pod Force One” podcast. “I’m not going to let them ruin it,” he added.
Trump suggested he could still get things done even if Democrats win the midterms. “They’ll be sending stuff up. You veto it,” he said. “And eventually, after a month or two of getting all vetoed, they’re just wasting [time], they come over, and you make a deal. I think that probably would happen, but hopefully we don’t have to worry about that.”
Trump made similar remarks against Democrats during a Fox News interview on The Ingraham Angle, as reported by The Hill. Trump told host Laura Ingraham that he expects to spend the next two years blocking what he called “their bad stuff.” He noted that during his first term, Democrats controlled the House but not the Senate in his final two years, which made it difficult for liberal legislation to reach his desk. So far, Trump has vetoed only two bills during his second term, compared to 10 vetoes in his first term.
Are Democrats leading the race in the upcoming elections?
Democrats are heavily favored to gain control of the House in this week’s U.S. midterm elections, with analyst Nate Silver’s forecast model giving them an 82% chance. They are also strong favorites to win the Senate.
Additionally, the Cook Political Report notes that Democrats hold only narrow leads of one to four points in polls for key Senate races in states that are usually Republican strongholds: Kansas, Iowa, Texas, Alaska, and Ohio. Registered voters prefer a Democratic-controlled Congress by 7 points, with Democrats leading Republicans 52%-45% in a new national NBC News poll.
Since 1938, the party in the White House has lost House seats in all but two elections. Currently, Republicans hold a very slim majority in the lower chamber. Democrats have pledged to investigate Trump, his administration, and several of his allies. Nevertheless, Trump said he was optimistic that Republicans can retain control of both chambers of Congress as he continues his nationwide midterm campaign.
“They want to get rid of your Second Amendment, have transgender for everyone,” he said of the Democrats. “Look, if we didn’t win — I think we’re going to do great — but if we didn’t win, I’d veto everything. I’ll be vetoing, vetoing.”
Also in the interview, Trump reflected on how Democrats will likely call him a “lame duck” over the next two years, while admitting he wishes he could run again. “I’d love to run again if I had the chance, but the language is very exacting,” he said, referring to the term limits in the Constitution’s 22nd Amendment. “They had a poll the other day where I’d beat everybody by so much. I’d love to run, but it’s fine. You know, we have more than two years left. That’s a long time. You can do a lot in that period of time, and you’ve seen the job we’ve done.”
