President Trump’s inner circle is slowly chipping, and nowhere was it more apparent than when Elon Musk shared that he was “disappointed” after reading the details of the massive spending bill that has been coined the “big beautiful bill” by the president.
The bill seeks to make the 2017 Trump tax cuts permanent. It has its highlights, including tax relief to families through an enhanced Child Tax Credit. There’s also the removal of taxation on tips and bonuses. But the more controversial elements of the bill include reforming Medicaid by adding work requirements. Additionally, it allocates more funds to ICE, despite the agency willfully ignoring some significant laws.
But the rub of the entire bill was when Congressional Budget Office analysis revealed that, if signed into law, the bill would mean that by the 2027 financial year, the government would be running with an additional $600 billion deficit. Which means the government would require at least a $600 billion loan annually. This in itself is concerning, but for Elon Musk — it especially renders all his (futile) efforts in DOGE even more meaningless.
Elon Musk was one of Trump’s biggest donors, and he came in with a promise of cutting $2 trillion in government expenditure. He even decimated some very vital government agencies, with much glee expressed on his X account. But it seems he’s now leaving with even more debt than he found. And when he sat down with CBS Sunday Morning, he expressed disappointment by stating partly that, “I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, I don’t know if it can be both. That’s just my personal opinion.”

The tech titan expressed worry about how the bill actually increases the deficit, not reduces it — something most Republicans have been obfuscating or outright denying. But this marks yet another major issue that the Tesla CEO disagrees with Trump on, which is significant because reports have been leaking from the White House about how he’s not a particularly well-liked figure in the administration. Trump even recently seemed to take a jab at someone who sounds a lot like him for using Ozempic. If they’re willing to publicly disagree with each other — is the next step trading insults? Knowing the two, that’s not particularly out of the question.
On this, though, it seems Elon Musk’s opinions align with experts’ assessment of the situation. Whereas it’s clear that Elon Musk’s intentions will always align with his various businesses over any other agenda — he is still probably the only high-ranking member of this administration that Trump somehow has not been able to offer something tempting enough to make him parrot the party talking points.
As it stands, the people who stand to gain the most out of this bill seem to be the elite of society. And with the economy being shaky globally, it remains to be seen if this particular bill becomes the most significant financial bill in history. Trump probably intends it to be just that. But it might not pan out as he intends. If his own allies admit it’s bad, then it’s probably bad.
