‘Bumbling old fool’: Confused Donald Trump rails against Communist South Africans in Miami, even allies raise eyebrows

Donald Trump and his MAGA cronies constantly cackle about Joe Biden’s cognitive decline throughout the latter half of his presidency. But maybe they should be wary of throwing stones in glass houses, as the evidence is stacking up that Trump isn’t playing with anything close to a full deck of cards.

Doctors have long opined that his rambling speeches, delusions of grandeur, inability to stay on topic, and odd word salads are indications that he’s suffering from dementia. Trump himself boasts that he’s nailing cognitive tests that disprove this, though frankly any doctor who pronounced him unfit to serve as president would be signing the death warrant for their career.

Anyhow, Trump appeared last night to deliver the keynote speech at the America Business Forum in Miami. Even by his standards, this was a worryingly bizarre speech completely unmoored from reality. In a particularly insane moment, Trump began to insist that Miami is being invaded by legions of South African communists:

“For generations Miami has been a haven for those fleeing communist tyranny in South Africa. I mean, if you take a look at what’s going on in parts of South Africa. Look at South Africa, what’s going on. Look at South America, what’s going on. You know, we have a G20 meeting in South Africa. South Africa shouldn’t even be in the Gs anymore. Because what’s happened there is bad. I’m not going.”

Time for bed, grandpa

Let’s give this confused old man the benefit of the doubt and assume when he was rambling about “South Africa” he meant “South America”. I mean, sure he’s the leader of the free world and he only got his continents mixed up, but we all make verbal boo-boos from time to time.

If Biden had made such a sustained string of gaffes like this, Trump and his MAGA acolytes would have been beating down the doors to argue he was unfit for office. And they’d be absolutely right to do so!

But this works both ways. Trump’s cognitive state is clearly as bad or worse than Biden’s was at this point in his presidency, so just as Biden should have been removed from office during his term, Trump should be declared mentally incompetent. But he won’t be, because MAGA is clearly happy to pretend this naked, confused Emperor is as smart as a whip and fully clothed.
