Democrat senator who revealed Donald Trump’s ‘insane’ Iran war plan last week suffers sudden stroke, hospitalized

"We are optimistic he will make a full recovery."

Connecticut senator Chris Murphy has been hospitalized after suffering a sudden stroke. According to his chief of staff, Allison Herwitt (per The Guardian), Murphy began feeling numbness in his arm while attending his son’s hockey game. He was then taken to hospital, where doctors confirmed he’d suffered a stroke.

Herwitt confirmed Senator Murphy has been transferred to Johns Hopkins and that “doctors are encouraged by his progress, he is awake and alert, and we are optimistic he will make a full recovery.” It is unclear precisely what kind of stroke Murphy suffered, but at least his staff sound confident he’ll be back in action soon.

Murphy has long been one of Donald Trump’s fiercest critics, saying he feels dutybound to protect American democracy from him. In a 2025 interview, he raised concerns about the 2028 presidential election, saying: “We are not right now on a glide path to have a free and fair election in 2028, so all of us better put all of our energy into trying to save the democracy.”

“The plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation”

He added to that on Saturday, saying: “Donald Trump is the most corrupt president in our nation’s history. There’s no close second.” He also urged voters to head to the polls in the hopes of securing a Democrat-controlled House and Senate.

Murphy also hit the headlines after releasing a statement slamming what he said were Trump’s plans to “restart” the war with Iran. Speaking at the Middle East Institute last week (and on X) he said: “Trump is reportedly planning to restart war with Iran after the election. Some of us have been briefed on the war plan. And while I cannot disclose any details, I can say this: the plan is insane. It will not achieve objectives and will set off a new cycle of escalation.” He added, “the plan they have developed will lead, in my view, to a prolongment and an escalation of this war that will be devastating for our security interests.”

It is unknown what this “insane” plan is, though former Fox News host Tucker Carlson has come out publicly to claim that the “Trump administration may be within days of launching a nuclear strike on Iran”, adding that, “The target would be Pickax Mountain in central Iran, where Israeli intelligence claims the Iranian government has restarted its nuclear enrichment program.”

Regardless, well-wishes have begun to appear for Murphy, with Connecticut Lt Gov. Susan Bysiewic saying (per Western Mass News), “I was with Senator Murphy on Friday evening, where he was energetically encouraging voters to participate in the upcoming election. I am glad to hear that he is doing well, and I look forward to continuing our joint efforts to support the people of Connecticut.”
