Failed Democratic senatorial contender Haley Stevens has been open with her thoughts about Donald Trump and MAGA. In 2021, she co-sponsored articles of impeachment against Trump, calling him “a threat and a danger to our Republic and our national security.” More recently, she slammed Trump’s “reckless judgment” after he launched attacks on Iran, saying, “he cannot be trusted with unchecked authority.”
Stevens’ anger extended to the Republican candidate Michigan Mike Rogers, saying he would be “another rubber stamp for Donald Trump’s dangerous agenda,” that Rogers’ stance on LGBTQ+ rights is “repulsive,” and that his campaign is “filled… with bigots.”
All of which means Stevens’ last-minute endorsement of Mike Rogers has raised some eyebrows. Stevens was pressed by Anderson Cooper yesterday on why she’d suddenly decided to ally with MAGA, but could not answer.
A “despicable betrayal”
Trump himself is clearly loving this bizarre switch-up from Stevens, heaping praise upon her for endorsing a man she dubbed “MAGA Mike”. Speaking outside in Iowa yesterday, he urged Stevens to don the red hat and climb aboard the Trump train: “It was an incredible thing. I’d love her to join the Republican Party. I think that could happen.”
Trump went on to praise Rogers, comparing him to apple pie: “Mike Rogers is apple pie. And you know what this country needs? A little apple pie. We don’t need the communists or jihadists, the Muslim Brotherhood. We need apple pie. He’s apple pie. He’ll be good.” He also once again urged Americans to “Pretend I’m on the ballot,” before adding, “Essentially, I am on the ballot.”
Stevens’ friends, allies, and campaign staff appear completely bewildered by her sudden political U-turn. Her longtime chief of staff, Justin German, confirmed that her “shocked and heartbroken” staff have resigned, her former campaign communications director, Arik Wolk, said her actions are “ridiculous and pathetic,” and even Chuck Schumer stepped in to slam her, taking to X to say that:
“This is a despicable betrayal from Rep. Stevens Senate Democrats are united in our support for Abdul El-Sayed, because we know he will fight for the economic interests of working families in Michigan, unlike Mike Rogers, who is a tool of Donald Trump and billionaire donors.”
It remains to be seen whether Stevens’ actions will impact tomorrow’s vote. El-Sayed remains the favorite to win, with prediction market Kalshi giving him a 78% chance of triumphing over Rogers.
