Democratic Rep. Haley Stevens of Michigan has thrown her support behind Republican Mike Rogers in the state’s Senate contest. The move marks a break from her own party’s candidate, Abdul El-Sayed, as voters prepare to head to the polls.
Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville responded with a YouTube video posted shortly after Stevens’ announcement. In the clip, he argued that the endorsement would finish her political career.
Carville described the choice as El-Sayed offering one cheeseburger and Rogers offering two. He said that, in the spirit of John Fetterman, Stevens took the extra one. “I mean, lady, if you’re going to sell your soul, you gotta get more for it than a f–kin’ cheeseburger, okay!” he said.
Growing disagreements prompt Stevens to back Rogers
Mediaite points out that Stevens had lined up behind El-Sayed once he won the Democratic primary against her. That support later cooled as several disputes surfaced in the final stretch of the campaign.
One flashpoint was El-Sayed’s refusal to say whether he saw Iran or Israel as the larger threat. Stevens told reporters the answer was clearly Iran and that it should not have been difficult for him to state.
She also objected to his decision not to condemn a campaign advertisement. The spot showed a couple shopping for groceries and complaining they could not afford food because the U.S. government was sending money to Israel “for killing Palestinians.”
El-Sayed’s campaign then instructed Stevens to stay away from his events during the last few days before Election Day. In public, however, El-Sayed has laughed off a sabotage question about Stevens.
The Congresswoman said the request convinced her to switch her endorsement to Rogers. “We have to stand with country. We can’t stand with hate,” Stevens told reporters. “We can’t stand with Hasan Piker,” she emphasized.
President Donald Trump welcomed the endorsement and credited Stevens with “bravery” for joining Rogers’ side. Most polls compiled by The New York Times currently give El-Sayed a lead of between 4 and 9 points over Rogers. Separate polling shows Michigan Democrats overwhelmingly support El-Sayed despite pushback from party leaders.
Carville said Stevens needed to set some price on herself or show some kind of God d–n self-pride. He declared that her political career is over. He warned that Republicans would regard her as nothing more than a used condom and that Democrats would not value her any higher. “You made your bed, sleep in it. You sh–t in your mess kit, eat it,” Carville said.
