Marjorie Taylor Greene dumps MAGA, joins Democrats in shutdown showdown

With every major policy debate, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene subtly drifts further away from MAGA. The latest issue of the government shutdown and the GOP’s stance that they will no longer give tax credits to Obamacare premiums marks yet another instance where Greene has loudly and publicly declared that she won’t toe the party line.

Rep. Greene took to X to tell her millions of followers that while she still has reservations about Obamacare, she doesn’t believe letting the tax credits expire is the solution the GOP claims it is. Rep. Greene then went on to say that she’s noted her own adult children’s premiums are scheduled to double.

The post was accompanied by a Google search with what appeared to be an AI-generated summary explaining what would happen to the premiums Americans would pay if it weren’t for the Democratic Party preventing the Trump administration funding bill. So while there are unquestionably serious consequences that have come as a result of giving Donald Trump an excuse to cut even more federal jobs — it’s clear that even some GOP members see the logic behind protecting the Affordable Care Act.

Recently, Greene has been expressing how far MAGA is drifting from her stated values. It started long before the ACA-related shutdown. Greene claimed that Loomer’s advice was misleading Trump and causing him to lose touch with his base. Consequently, she has stood directly in opposition to MAGA on issues such as the Jeffrey Epstein files and Trump’s “one big beautiful bill.”

However, whenever Greene takes a hard line against the GOP, it’s often wise to look closer. She often makes it seem like she’s fallen out with the MAGA base, but when it comes down to taking a concrete stance as a member of Congress — she’s unlikely to actually vote against MAGA’s agendas.

Still, with this particular issue, Greene is adding weight to the view that Trump can’t truly claim to be “America First” while defunding healthcare for Americans — especially considering his administration continues to support funding foreign wars.

I was not in Congress when all this Obamacare, “Affordable Care Act” bullshit started. I got here in 2021. As a matter of fact, the ACA made health insurance UNAFFORDABLE for my family after it was passed, with skyrocketing premiums higher than our house payment.

According to NBC, it’s not just Greene this time. There are reportedly multiple Republicans in both the House and Senate who oppose allowing the Obamacare tax credits to expire. This issue has created yet another rift within the party. Some representatives, regardless of political alignment, understand that when the time comes to explain why their voters’ healthcare premiums went up, “Trump told us to do it” won’t be a convincing answer heading into the midterms.

Greene has also received some praise from Representative Greg Casar, who said this was one of the rare occasions he felt it appropriate to quote her. But ultimately, Greene still holds to the party line that’s turning this government shutdown into an immigration debate — and if they successfully shift the conversation in that direction, it’s clear which side of the aisle she’ll align with.

For now, as strange as it seems, Greene continues to at least have talking points — if nothing else — that fall on the right side of history.
