Donald Trump and the Republican Party are right to be terrified of the November midterms. These are rarely good news for any president, but this year predictions are particularly gloomy thanks to cratering presidential approval ratings and recent shock Democratic wins in deep red states.
In the event of a Democratic landslide, Trump’s presidential powers become much more limited overnight. Sure, he may not care so much about the legality of what he’s doing, but without control of the Senate and House, he’ll find it much harder to push through new laws and find his ability to enforce executive orders greatly diminished.

For many, the House is already looking like a write-off for Republicans, who have been damaged by the general chaos surrounding Trump. Now the GOP is facing “growing anxiety” that they’ll lose the Senate as well.

Senior Republicans are now bracing themselves for a wipe-out, with Michigan-based GOP strategist Jason Roe telling Politico he believes “momentum has shifted to Democrats.”. An anonymous Georgie Republican operative says, “I wouldn’t say I feel warm and fuzzy about things right now”.
The article specifically names North Caroline and Ohio as flipping to the Dems, with hopes of the GOP flipping Georgia fading fast. There are still some hopes that Michigan could go Republican, but right now it’s not looking good.
Given the ludicrous levels of embarrassing incompetence across the Trump administration, there’s no single cause for this potential electoral disaster. However, the elephant in the room is the escalating disaster of Trump’s war with Iran and the consequential skyrocketing gas prices.
Even the most ardent red cap-wearing MAGA disciple doesn’t enjoy paying an eyewatering amount for gas at the pumps, and Trump’s own insistence that this is a temporary pain worth the high price. He says voters should thank him as they can feel safer from Iran, though it appears that regular Americans are feeling precisely the opposite!
Trump himself is arguing that this kind of defeat would mean his political end, saying:
“You gotta win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms… You just gotta be… I mean… they’ll find a reason to impeach me. Uh, I’ll get impeached.”
Don’t threaten us with a good time, Donald.
I suspect Trump’s comments will backfire on him, as many voters appear to be preparing to head to the midterms vote in the explicit hope that a crushing midterm defeat will usher in Trump’s political demise.
Sadly, it’s not as if being impeached means much these days. Trump himself was impeached twice during his first term, making him the only president (and the only federal official in history) to have been impeached more than once. In both cases, the Senate trials ended in acquittal, so he wasn’t removed from office or barred from future office.
But hey, maybe the third time’s the charm. That said, if Trump does realize he’s cruising for a bruising in the midterms, expect him to ramp up voter intimidation while trying to rig the numbers. And that’s if he allows them to happen at all. I’m sure he can figure out some kind of sudden “national emergency” that means, sadly, democracy will have to be suspended indefinitely…
