Sabrina Carpenter decided that she wants no part of the cheerleading going on around Donald Trump and his MAGA movement — and some people believed that was a notch too far. One of the people who chose to join in on the piling on was internet personality Steven Crowder, and the people who know him quickly reminded him of the skeletons in his closet.
Carpenter is one of the premier pop stars of her day; that comes with courting controversy and some Grammys — that’s kind of part of the deal with being a superstar. Repeatedly, Carpenter has also added that she’s fine with all the attention — good or bad — her status will bring. But what Carpenter will not stand for is when the White House uses her music to promote videos of their immigration agenda.
Most people just silently pull their music behind the scenes, and using the intricate paperwork of the music business, Trump administration videos trolling their critics just get a copyright strike. Carpenter chose to take a different route, though; she wanted to make it very clear that she doesn’t want any part of Trump’s agenda. At first, she was praised, then it evolved into criticizing other pop stars who haven’t taken similar stances, but then it reached a third level where conservative commentators like Steven Crowder reminded Carpenter of her past controversial music videos.
All stories on the internet eventually reach a third gear, where sense, colloquially, “leaves the chat,” and in comes commentators like Crowder, who are only familiar to you if you’re chronically online. Of course, Carpenter didn’t have anything to say back to Crowder. She didn’t have to, though, because the internet took up right where she left off.
In the comment section, there were multiple people calling out Crowder for trying to switch up Carpenter’s point. But the user who completely took over the conversation was the person who posted a video of Crowder and his wife from his Ring Camera that made it onto the internet in 2021.
The footage shows Crowder having a heated argument at their Texas home. At the time, Crowder’s wife, Hilary, was eight months pregnant, and she was even struggling to stand as Crowder berated her for the grave misdeed of using his car to go get their household groceries. Crowder was mad at his wife for not performing her wifely duties to his standards and for lacking respect for him as a husband.
aren’t you the same man who abused his pregnant wife because she wanted to take the car to get groceries? telling her to “f*cking watch it” and “i will f*ck you up”. i can only imagine what you did off camera https://t.co/1Nh05pjBGc pic.twitter.com/voLM8M8Zop

Crowder’s criticism reeks of hypocrisy — her problem with Sabrina Carpenter’s music videos stems from her fictional treatment of men. And you can make an argument that fiction does go far in influencing people on what is acceptable and what isn’t.
That argument, however, cannot be made by someone who is on camera demeaning his own wife — especially since he is using the Bible as a moral compass while foregoing his own role of loving and protecting his wife. The comment section on X promptly reminded Crowder of that in as many ways as possible.
Hilary went on to file for divorce from Steven Crowder that same year, 2021.
