Senator Ruben Gallego gave a serious warning to military officers this week. He said clearly that “there will be consequences” if they go ahead with plans to court-martial fellow Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. This is serious business, and Gallego, a Democrat, is not hiding his worries about the political situation.
According to Fox News, the warning came on after the Department of War announced earlier on X that it was starting a formal review of Senator Kelly. Kelly, a retired Navy captain, is being looked at because he was in a controversial video. That video asked service members to “refuse illegal orders” from President Donald Trump.
Kelly was one of six Democratic lawmakers who told U.S. military members to ignore “unlawful” orders from the Trump administration. Gallego thinks the officers involved need to think carefully about the big picture before moving forward. He told Kasie Hunt that while he trusts the U.S. military and the justice system to handle the case properly, officers should know there will be major problems if they try to “railroad” Kelly.
Trump’s presidency won’t last forever, and accountability will follow
“Donald Trump is going to be gone in a couple of years,” Gallego said. “And if you’re part of the military that is going after sitting senators, sitting members of Congress, and part of the weaponization of government, there will be consequences, without a doubt.”
If officers are part of this possible tribunal, they should be “looking over their shoulders,” Gallego explained. They know President Trump will be gone, and they won’t have that shield anymore. Gallego offered a clear path for safety, though: “They’re going to have to do the safest thing possible, which is follow the Constitution of the United States, and you’ll be fine.”
That’s a strong opinion on where their true loyalty should be. Gallego didn’t just issue a threat; he strongly defended why the video was necessary. He said he has heard from military officers who are truly “concerned” about the president’s actions. While some lawmakers have faced their own controversies, including a Republican senator arrested for shocking reasons, Gallego’s focus remains on constitutional concerns.

Furthermore, Gallego noted that President Trump has been “saying things that are, on its face, illegal.” He also mentioned President Trump’s recent strikes against Venezuela, where information wasn’t given to Congress, though Gallego didn’t clearly label those strikes as illegal.
Ultimately, Gallego reminded everyone that service members don’t have to follow “illegal orders.” Despite the strong defense of the video’s purpose, the Democratic senator confirmed he was “not aware” if President Trump had actually given any specific illegal military orders.
