The White House Deputy Chief of Staff, Stephen Miller, has doubled down on the Trump administration’s deportation policy. The current approach has seen much criticism from Democrats and Republicans alike, especially after the illegal deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia.
Despite his government’s obvious mistake, Miller has refused to back down on the issue. In an interview last week he went on an unhinged rant in which he demanded reparations for the American people in response to comments from Democratic Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse.
Stephen Miller’s insane demands explained
Whitehouse shared his idea for the government be fined over the deportation of Abrego Garcia. He suggested that a federal judge could put the government under a civil contempt sanction in order to compel the government to comply with the court order. This would involve a fine of $1 million a day, some of which would go to Abrego Garcia. Sounds pretty fair, after all, the government should be doing something to make things right.
Miller responded to the proposal asking, “For the love of God, where are the damages for Americans?” He listed a plethora of problems currently facing the U.S. — none of which are directly caused by immigration. He argues that “an entire generation of Americans, multiple generations, in fact, have been robbed of educational opportunities.” Remind me, who was it that defunded the Department of Education? I don’t think it was immigrants.
Miller continues, blaming the Democrats open border policy for the decline of the country and blaming migrants for every issue under the sun.
“Where does our whole country go to get repaid for all of the wealth, all of the prosperity and security that has been stolen from us by decades of uncontrolled illegal mass migration? Because we all deserve reparations for what has been stolen from us.”
Is he for real?
While Miller likely wasn’t seriously proposing reparations for immigration, it does reflect what a contentious issue this has become. His claims that open border policies have led to major decline in the U.S. is hard to verify and besides, Trump’s policies are set to cost the American people a whole lot more than Democrat border policies ever did.
Anyways, all this is besides the point, Abrego Garcia was in the U.S. legally and he should never have been deported. Miller’s claim that Americans should be paid damages for illegal immigration has no bearing on the situation in El Salvador. Two wrongs don’t make a right and nothing he says can justify leaving Garcia to rot in what’s been referred to as a “death camp.”
