A Michigan chef who doesn’t like seafood orders every Outback appetizer, then says the ahi tuna tastes ‘like if beef jerky was wearing a bow tie’

“Has my body lied to me this whole time?"

Jason, a Michigan chef, just walked into Outback Steakhouse and delighted the server and bartender, while likely traumatizing the kitchen staff. The face of the popular Instagram and TikTok channel, The Everyday Chef and Wife, seemed just as excited as the server when he placed his order. As his wife noted in the overlay text of the post that drew in 6.7 million views in less than a day, “My chef husband made ordering every appetizer his entire personality.”

In the chaotic but fun video, Jason got a massive grin as their server, Melina, asked them if they needed a second to look over the appetizers. He told her, “Nope. I would like one of every appetizer you have.” She immediately matched his smile and flashed the camera a thumbs-up as she noted, “Oh my god. Okay. Okay. That sounds great. I’m really excited to go back there and tell them.”

From the comments, it seems the goal of these videos is to test all the appetizers and rank the food for their viewers. However, as Jason’s wife noted in the caption, “We haven’t learned our lesson that this is impossible to do with only two people.” The kitchen clearly agreed, because right after they placed their order, the bartender came by. It was at the behest of the kitchen, but also because she recognized them.

She confirmed that the order was, indeed, legit

The bartender told Jason, “I don’t mean to interrupt. But I love you. I follow you. Thank you. I’m bartending, and I go in the back, and the kitchen’s like, you might want to check that to make sure that’s legit. I looked over, and I was like, no, it’s legit. I’m coming over to say hi because you’re freaking amazing.” Then began the long, and frankly delectable, parade of food.

Every one of Jason’s reactions was entertaining to watch. As he dug into the cheesy French fries, he remarked, “All right, let me get one of these guys. Look at that. Look at this. This tastes like the college experience but in a good way.” Next, he pulled up a massive blooming onion and had a punny review. Jason declared, “It’s aussie-ome,” referring to the steakhouse’s Australian roots.

What really surprised them was the Ahi Tuna and Shrimp. In the caption, Jason’s wife noted that he did not like seafood. However, when he bit into the Ahi Tuna, he immediately looked impressed, noting, “I don’t wanna offend anybody, but that tastes like if beef jerky was wearing a bow tie. In a brilliant way. Like that’s kind of already towards the top.” When he took a bite of the shrimp, he asked, “Has my body lied to me this whole time? Maybe my taste buds are changing. I am floored.”

When ranking the items at the end of the meal, Jason placed the Bloomin’ Onion at the very top. He also threw in some advice to his viewers: “This guy’s at the top. He should be, right? This is the iconic Blooming Onion, okay. Now, should you eat this all yourself? No. Make some friends and order the Blooming Onion, okay? Dang it.”

His fans were tickled by the entire review. One fan commented, “I love this page! What I also like is that you pick every day places that anybody can go to and have a good experience. It’s like you’re teaching people how to rediscover the good things at chains without being derogatory or offensive to anybody that likes that food.”

My chef husband’s new favorite thing is ordering all of the appetizers at restaurants, but we haven’t learned our lesson that this is impossible to do with only two people. What were we thinking… 😬 And can we talk about the fact that my husband can cook seafood insanely well, but doesn’t like eating it?! Somehow he found TWO seafood dishes he likes at @Outback Steakhouse. What a plot twist! Though, I have to admit, the ahi tuna was my favorite. Our waitress Melina and the staff at Outback gave us such a great experience. I always have fun with this guy, but having amazing people taking care of us just made the night. Thank you! Should we go back for a Grumpy vs. Happy order? 🤩 #outbacksteakhouse #chefhusband #thechefandwife

Even Outback Steakhouse got in on the fun, commenting on TikTok, “Maaateee. this is absolutely incredible, might we even say ‘Aussie-ome.’ c’mon back and try our Best Steaks Ever. We think you’ll love our entire lineup.” Some Australian viewers were less familiar with the dish. One asked, “as an Aussie tf is a blooming onion”

It’s worth noting that while Jason’s experience was overwhelmingly positive, other diners have had mixed results when exploring the full scope of the Outback appetizer menu. According to Chowhound, their reviewers found the Grilled Shrimp on the Barbie to be the least impressive.

They did, however, agree with Jason that the Bloomin’ Fried Shrimp took the top spot for its texture and flavor. In the video, Jason really liked the mushrooms, but not everyone at Chowhound agreed, giving the Sydney Shrooms a mixed review due to texture concerns, but praising the breading.

They left with a “hefty” takeaway bag, and Jason had one last plan for the night: “I’m walking home. So I can walk this off.”
