Boston woman walks into Cartier to drop thousands after a career win. Gets allegedly fat shamed by the salesman: ‘what sort of tactic was this’

A Boston woman said her mother was allegedly fat shamed by a salesman at the Cartier store on Newbury Street, according to a TikTok video posted by a creator identified as Molly, who goes by @mollzfahdays. Molly said in her TikTok video that the incident happened in December 2022, when she and her mother visited the store to purchase matching rings.

Molly said the visit was meant to celebrate her mother’s role in the sale of a company she worked at. She described her mother as a “badass businesswoman” in the video and said the family had a positive experience at a Cartier location in San Juan, Puerto Rico, years earlier, where they had also purchased matching Love rings.

According to Molly, the mother and daughter went to the Boston store already knowing they wanted the Juste un Clou ring in white gold with diamonds. Molly said a salesman looked at her mother’s hand and allegedly told her, “Oh, I don’t think we make it in your size.”

Salesman allegedly offered to check men’s section for a fitting size

Molly said her mother was wearing a Cartier ring at the time and asked the salesman if he could get the new ring in that same size. The salesman then allegedly responded, “Well, I can check the back in the men’s section for if any of the men’s sizes would fit you.”

Molly said she then suggested to the salesman, “Maybe you could bring us the smallest bracelet size you have and she could try that on as a ring.” She said the salesman went to the back to check on sizing.

While he was gone, Molly said her mother turned to her and asked, “Am I literally being fat-shamed at Cartier right now?” Molly said she told her mother that she believed that was indeed happening. Public complaints about unfair treatment aren’t limited to luxury shopping, as a woman says a Miami Beach club denied her entry over her clothes. 

In the video, Molly said her mother is “not that big” and that her mother’s ring size is only about two sizes larger than her own. She said the two considered leaving the store while the salesman was checking on sizing but ultimately decided to stay since they had been planning the shopping trip for a while.

Molly said the interaction “put a terrible taste in our mouth and semi-ruined our shopping experience,” though she said they ultimately purchased the rings. In the caption of her video, Molly wrote, “My mom was fat shamed at the Cartier store in Boston! This was bizarre. Has anyone else had any odd experiences like this??” Publicly calling out fat shaming can lead to unexpected public support, as seen when a woman worried she’d be canceled for fat shaming another woman but instead got a unanimous pat on the back. 

Molly said she has heard of luxury salespeople using reverse psychology tactics to encourage purchases, such as suggesting a customer cannot afford an item. However, she said in the video, “I’ve never heard of anybody being fat shamed and that going well.” She then asked viewers, “What sort of tactic was this he using here?”

The video drew a number of comments from viewers reacting to the story. One commenter wrote, “Molly ”can you bring her the smallest bracelet size you have so she can wear it as a ring” is hilarious and diabolical,” to which Molly replied, “Hahahahahaha right!!!”

Another commenter asked, “And they… had the ring? The f–k was that about?” Molly responded, “Right!!” A separate exchange saw a commenter write, “Thinking I need the name of mister man salesman I just wanna… chat.” Molly replied, “I feel like this calls for a free ring! Right?” The commenter then added, “That way we can get matching rings to go with our almost matching rings, ofc,” to which Molly responded, “Goals.” The commenter followed up with, “Ok but mom gets one too bc retirement.”

Cartier has not publicly responded to Molly’s claims as of this writing.
