Comedian Meredith Masony recently joked about a billing mix-up she attributes to her husband’s ADHD. What started with her puzzling over his random expletive-filled shout in the garage ended with a revelation that their water had been cut off. She uploaded her exasperated story to Instagram and TikTok, where it drew hundreds of thousands of views.
In her post, Masony told her viewers, “So my husband was in the garage, and I heard him scream the F word. And then he walked into the house, and I said, ‘What’s wrong?’ And he said, ‘Nothing.’ And then I saw him get on the phone, and he quickly left the house. And I was like, ‘What is going on?’’ She says he stuck with that answer all the way until she went to the bathroom and found that there was no water to wash her hands.
“I came out, and I said to my husband, I go, ‘Why don’t… why don’t we have any water?’ I said, ‘Did you break a pipe or something? Like, what’s going on?’” This time, he finally told her what happened. He told her, “Well, I was in the garage and the guy from the water company pulled up, and I was like, ‘Are you here to flush the back line?’ And he goes, ‘No, I’m here to shut off your water.’” When Masony’s husband asked why, he was purportedly told, “Well, you didn’t pay your bill.”
Her husband didn’t believe it at first
According to Masony’s retelling of events, which can’t be verified, her husband had an argument with the worker. She told her viewers that her husband argued that he had the bill on autopay, so there was no way it was not pulled. The worker disagreed, she says and cut off the water anyway, even when Masony’s husband asked for a moment to double-check.
Masony wasn’t amused when she learned what went wrong. She explained, “So my husband comes in, and he gets on the computer, and he looks, and it turns out that he set up auto-pay on the house that we sold. Not the house that we live in.”
In her caption, she wrote, “I love my husband. Having a spouse with ADHD comes with some baggage. All joking aside, it is a struggle to have/support someone with ADHD, and we make jokes to keep some sanity and sense of humor. Do you or your spouse have ADHD? Does this sound familiar?”
Masony’s story drew a wide range of reactions from her audience, from support to amusement. On Instagram, one user wrote, “So…you’ve been paying the new owners water bill!? Ohhh nooo!!!” Another commenter offered a bit of grace, writing, “Things happen. I am sure he’s very upset with himself so be kind.” Another user simply noted, “Hilarious and so relatable.”
TikTokers took to her post to share a lot of similar stories. One user shared, “Like 25 years ago I literally watched an electric guy climb up a pole from my living room chair. I looked over to my husband and said oh my someone is getting their electricity cut off!. That’s crazy! Then bam, we had no power. Turns out the bill with the check fell in between the seats in my car and didn’t get mailed out with the others.”
Navigating life with ADHD often involves these types of organizational challenges. According to HelpGuide, symptoms like forgetfulness and poor organizational skills can lead to significant household chaos.
HelpGuide noted that in this dynamic, the non-ADHD partner often feels “incredibly stressed out” because they “carry the vast proportion of the family responsibilities and can never let their guard down.” In a different demonstration, a mom recently took to TikTok to show how overwhelming it can be to be a mother.
HelpGuide also recommends humor, “Learn to laugh over the inevitable miscommunications and misunderstandings. Laughter relieves tension and brings you closer together.”
For couples dealing with these dynamics, HelpGuide also advised that they should move away from a parent-child relationship and instead work as a team. This might include creating practical plans, such as using shared calendars or automating tasks correctly, to ensure that important responsibilities like bill payments don’t fall through the cracks.
