NY mom decides to bill husband every time she hears one word in 7 hours. Half an hour later, she was already at $75: ‘We are overstimulated’

Jessa Sharp (jessaandmissamelia) is a New York mother who shares her life and her daughter’s milestones on Instagram and TikTok. She obviously loves her toddler, but one amusing thing she has been doing when she is overstimulated is taking on challenges. After punishing herself with squats and burpees, she decided to put a price tag on the feeling instead. The video went on to rack up over 10.1 million views.

She kicked off the experiment by telling her viewers, “I need money tomorrow. So I’m charging my husband $1 every time I hear the word mom. Mommy, mama. Everything counts. Starting now.” Like clockwork, her toddler calls out to her immediately. So Jessa holds up her clicker and presses it. The rest of the video is a chaotic, relatable montage of her daily routine. Whether she was at the store, in the car, or even trying to go to the bathroom, the calls for ‘mom’ kept coming.

As Jessa used the clicker, she kept her viewers updated with the overlay text. In five minutes, she had already heard 18 moms. At 30, it was 75. By 1.5 hours, Jessa was at 98, even though her daughter did “slow down a bit played with her friends.” The count kept climbing, hitting 202 at four hours, 331 at six hours, and finally 405 around the seven-hour mark. The post caption drove the point home: “If moms actually got $1 every time we heard “MOM”… we’d all be rich by Friday.”

Visualizing the struggle

Once her seven hours were up, Jessa sat down at her laptop to finalize the invoice. She told her viewers, “405 moms in 7 hours. I would say not bad considering the playdate, the quiet time. Anyway, I am printing my invoice. This will be sent tonight. I need the payment ASAP. I would say he got a discount for this because I was expecting about 800 to 1,000 dollars. Anyway, I don’t make the rules. I just invoice.”

The finale of the video is hilarious. Set to some jaunty music, Jessa approached her husband, who was relaxing in a recliner, and handed him the paperwork. She then held her hand out expectantly as he looked over the invoice. Props to him, but he just quietly handed Jessa his card. Jessa celebrated with a kiss and a quick dance behind his chair. She later added a cheeky update in the comments, stating, “Shopping cart cleared for the day. Thanks husband.”

On both platforms, the mom was floored by her fun experiment. One user wrote, “I really hope this puts things in perspective when moms say we are overstimulated. In no other capacity are we called on this much.” Another commenter joked, “He’s lucky she’s only charging a dollar per mom.”

Others shared their own struggles. A TikToker noted, “I told my son the other day if he could just not say mum for half an hour while I fold the laundry, then all I heard was “lauren” “lauren””lauren”…” Another stated, “I have 7 kids…. My husband can’t afford the number of clicks I would have.” One TikToker even jokingly asked, “Going to try this in my classroom… but who do I invoice?” to which Jessa replied, “The government.”

This feeling of being “overstimulated” is something many mothers know all too well. According to Northwest Family Clinics, overstimulation happens when your brain is taking in more sensory input than it can comfortably process. Whether it is the sound of a toy, the constant background noise, or a child calling your name repeatedly, it can push your nervous system into a stress response.

The clinic explains that motherhood brings a unique blend of physical, emotional, and mental demands that make this feeling more likely. Because there is often very little “off” time, the brain remains in a state of constant planning and management. When your system reaches its limit, you might feel irritable, short-tempered, or just mentally “full.” One mother had a breakdown when she realized her baby hid an ‘emotional support’ turd.

While it is a common experience, Northwest Family Clinics emphasizes that it isn’t something to ignore. Recognizing it early allows you to respond before it becomes overwhelming. The clinic suggests that simple, immediate strategies like stepping into another room, lowering the noise level, or taking a few slow, steady breaths can help your nervous system reset. You can also take a cruise like one mother did and get chaotically spoiled.

It’s a helpful reminder that feeling this way doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It’s simply a sign that your body is responding to a high level of demand, and taking small moments to support your own nervous system is a vital part of showing up for your family.
