‘Could’ve killed my dog’: Florida woman books an Airbnb, but landscapers suddenly show up unannounced

The host never mentioned a scheduled landscaping visit.

A Florida woman who goes by Elizabeth on TikTok says she had an unsettling experience during a recent Airbnb vacation after the rental property’s landscaping crew arrived without any warning while her dog was loose in the backyard. The video, posted to her account (@elizabetho1724), has accumulated over 22,000 views and sparked debate in the comments over whether the host was at fault.

Elizabeth says she and her husband rented an Airbnb that had a pool and a fenced-in backyard. According to her, having a fenced yard was a requirement because they brought their micro goldendoodle, a small dog she refers to as Romy. She said the fence had no holes, so she felt comfortable letting Romy run around outside while she relaxed in the pool.

One afternoon, Elizabeth said her husband left to go grocery shopping, leaving her alone at the property. While she was floating in the pool and Romy was running around the yard, the property’s landscaping crew arrived and entered through the back gate.

“So I jump out of the pool, don’t even get a towel or anything,” Elizabeth recalled in her video. “I’m like, ‘Stop! Stop, stop, stop, stop!’ Because my dog is on the other side of the fence, and she’s barking. She’s, like, running towards them, and he’s not stopping his lawnmower.”

Elizabeth said she ran across the yard trying to grab Romy while also trying to get the crew to shut off their equipment. She said a second worker then entered the yard with a weed whacker, which added to her panic. She claimed she eventually managed to grab her dog and then spoke to the workers directly.

“I said, ‘I’m going inside. Go mow when I’m inside. Please don’t come out here when my dog’s here,'” she said. According to Elizabeth, the workers agreed and were polite about it.

After the vacation ended, Elizabeth said the incident continued to bother her. She noted that the host had provided guests with a booklet of house rules, but said it contained no mention of scheduled landscaping visits. Her husband allegedly told her it was “not a big deal,” but Elizabeth disagreed. “That is a big deal to me. That’s a big deal,” she said.

Several days after returning home, Elizabeth said she messaged the host. “I said, ‘The only problem that we had, which was kind of significant, was the fact that we were not told when the landscapers were coming,'” she recalled. She also wrote that she had been “scared to death” the crew would run over her dog because they did not respond to her when she was telling them to stop.

According to Elizabeth, a co-host named Jeremy or Jimmy replied and said they do not know when the landscapers come. She said she pushed back, asking how a property owner would not know what day their landscapers are scheduled. The co-host reportedly responded that they do not know exactly when the crew arrives. Elizabeth said that after she wrote back explaining that her dog could have been killed, she received no further response.

“Those landscapers would have run over her in 5 seconds if they didn’t see her,” she said in the video. Other guests have reported similarly alarming discoveries, like finding blood stains in their rental.

In a statement to BroBible, an Airbnb spokesperson said: “We want every guest to feel informed about what to expect during their stay. We ask hosts to let guests know about any scheduled maintenance that could occur during a stay, and we are following up with the host on this.”

According to Airbnb‘s website, guests have a reasonable expectation of privacy in a rented space, and hosts are expected to obtain guest permission before accessing the listing or property during a reservation, unless there is an emergency. Whether the arrival of a landscaping crew falls under that policy is not explicitly addressed in the platform’s publicly available guidelines.

Reaction in the comments appeared divided. One viewer wrote, “We are all a little dumber after hearing this story,” suggesting they felt the situation was being blown out of proportion. Others, however, appeared to side with Elizabeth.

“They should know when the landscapers come and should have informed you, absolutely!” one commenter said. Another wrote, “Omg! I would be fired up especially if I was not fully dressed in pool lol They absolutely should have a specific time for lawn service and y’all needed to be contacted what time.” Host retaliation for reviews remains a contentious issue on the platform.

After initially asking viewers if she’s correct, Elizabeth goes on to say, “Actually, I don’t care what anybody says. I’m in the right, ’cause they could’ve killed my dog.”
