Viral footage of an altercation at a Dollar Tree in Texas has sparked outrage after a customer was recorded shouting that a store employee wasn’t speaking English. When other customers called the woman out on her racism, she turned on them too.
The tense confrontation was posted to TikTok by user “steamedbunbunny” (AKA Bunny), who is heard calling out the customer as another Dollar Tree employee scans her items and tries to stay out of the argument. Bunny, who appears to be a customer herself, tells her, “You’re racist,” and the angry customer responds, “I don’t care, speak English! Learn how to speak English! That’s not being racist; you’re in America.”
The customer continues her rant, getting more and more angry, both at the employee for not speaking English and at Bunny for interfering. She even threatens to physically assault Bunny for recording her. When she tells the customer, “You’re in a public space,” the customer responds, “This is my space, and I’ll slap the crap out of you!” In the video description, Bunny claims it was “All because an older employee doesn’t know English.”
The older employee that Bunny mentions wasn’t seen in the video, but nonetheless, she felt the need to stand up for the man because “No one else said anything.” Eventually, Bunny gathers her shopping and seems to back away; meanwhile, others in the Dollar Tree remain silent.
Bunny was the only person to speak up
Bunny sympathized with the employee while wondering who the woman was who verbally abused him for not knowing English.
Commenters on TikTok shared Bunny’s sentiment: “America has no official language,” wrote one person. Another said that Dollar Tree staff should have done more to combat the racist rhetoric being spouted by the customer: “The manager should have had her removed.”
On X people had much the same opinion: “USA is the 2nd largest Spanish speaking country in the world. The USA belongs to all people not just stupid racist white people,” wrote one person. According to languagetesting.com, 13% of the US population speak Spanish, making it the second most common language in the country.
Others called the customer a “Karen,” the classic insult for an entitled individual who usually makes life tougher for other people. A few also recommended that Bunny file a police report, expressing concern over the fact that the woman had threatened physical violence against her. “She threatened to harm you on camera. File a report,” wrote one commenter.
There has been no update from Bunny regarding the Karen customer so far. She may have taken her viewer’s advice and filed a report, but it’s currently unclear.
