A Maryland man has been arrested by police after a mother called police and claimed that the man had been living in the sewer and terrorizing her children like a real-life movie monster. Unique Wiggins claimed that the man repeatedly approached her children and even chased them down the street.
Wiggins, who lives in Baltimore County, said that her children told her that a man was speaking to them from underground, but that she initially didn’t believe her children’s claims. The bizarre case has already been likened to a real-life Pennywise online.
“It was a Friday, and my daughter, who is 21, called, and she was panicking. And I asked, ‘What’s wrong?” Wiggins told WJZ-TV. The concerned mother then claimed that her daughter told her, “‘The man told me I can’t walk right here and to just dip.’ And I’m like, ‘What man?’ And she was like, ‘The man in the sewer.’”
According to the outlet, Wiggins heard similar complaints from her other children at least four times, which prompted her to investigate herself. She claimed that she walked over to a manhole where she heard somebody singing. Wiggins then allegedly spoke with the man who she claimed was in the sewer, telling him to, “Leave my f—ing kids alone.”
The mother said that the man responded, “No, tell them to leave me alone?” To which she said, “They can’t possibly be messing with you, and you are in the sewer.”
Wiggins says she called the police on the man
The unnamed man was accused of speaking to Wiggins’ children, according to WJZ, prompting the concerned mother to call the police. However, she said that police told her that sewer lines and culverts are public property and that they couldn’t do anything.
“I don’t feel like I’m protected. I don’t feel like my kids are protected.” Wiggins siad. “I’m not saying this gentleman should necessarily go to jail, but he should not live in the sewer.”
The Baltimore County police said that the man was arrested but was released on October 13 on his own recognizance, meaning he didn’t need to post bail. Wiggins said she believed that the authorities could be doing more to protect the neighborhood. “They can put a no trespassing sign there. They can put a no trespassing sign, and they can cover the holes. That’s what I would like to see,” she said.
Baltimore County Police told WJZ that they offered to provide mobile services for the man but were not successful. Meanwhile, the Baltimore County Government said it was “committed to helping residents navigate resources and services, especially in time of need.”
