DC fans are sold on Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn but not so much ‘Joker 2’

Fans of 2019's 'Joker' are on board with Lady Gaga's role as Harley Quinn, but fears over it being a musical have still not been alleviated.

Images from the upcoming sequel to the incredibly successful 2019 Joker film, Joker: Folie Á Deux, already have people praising Lady Gaga‘s casting as Harley Quinn. Despite this, many are still feeling just a little skeptical about the musical aspect. Given the themes and tone of the first film, a new take on the Joker origin story by co-writer and director, Todd Phillips, a musical film does seem like a head-scratcher.

Joker was an exceptional film, the type that proves that if you have a great story, great writing, and great actors, you don’t need a huge budget. It took the well-known DC villain and completely flipped it on its head. We didn’t meet a confident and articulate anarchist, but a sad, misunderstood, downtrodden man with mental health problems with little support from society. His descent to violence and taking charge of his own life had us both scared of him and rooting for him all at the same time, a truly masterful bit of acting and well deserving of Joaquin Pheonix’s Best Actor Oscar win.

Now, Arthur Fleck will gain a companion in the form of Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn, and with the release of images from the now-wrapped set, it would seem that fans are really here for it. What they are still a little dubious about is how on earth it is going to work as a musical, even if one of the world’s best singers is starring in a leading role.

Most people were extremely positive about the singer/actresses look in these images.

Many are happy that for once, the character actually looks unhinged rather than just sexy.

Of course, without the acting we only have the images to go off, and this user thinks that they, at least, are a promising sign.

Many agree that within the world that Phillips has built this version of the character works well.

The musical element is still giving people pause though.

Some are worried it will come off like a cheesy sitcom that adds a musical element for almost no reason (though I might add that Scrubs did this because it is meant to be a parody of those shows).

Some are already imaging how the music will work its way into the film.

If these images are anything to go by, fans are still on board with Lady Gaga’s casting, but we will have to wait and see if the addition of musical theatre will work or not. We have a while to wait though, as the release date for Joker: Folie Á Deux isn’t until October of 2024.
