‘I hope you left him’: Woman’s husband lies about heating being broken over winter, then still expects her to pay half the energy bill

A woman has turned to the internet to ask the denizens of TikTok what they would do in her shoes after her husband allegedly put the “child lock” on the thermostat in their home and told her the heating was broken over the winter.

TikToker, “amyelizabet12,” claimed that her husband had gaslit her by telling her that the heating was broken. In her video, she said that she had no choice but to spend the winter months “wearing coats inside the house and sleeping with hot water bottles.”

However, after enduring the cold in her home for the winter, she later discovered that the heating hadn’t been broken after all. Amy claimed that her husband had been lying to her and had actually put the child lock on the thermostat to prevent her from changing the temperature. She said that, when she confronted him about it, he “laughed and said he couldn’t believe I’d been stupid enough not to figure it out sooner.”

But that’s not all. After apparently going the whole winter without the heating, Amy claimed that her husband then asked her to pay half of the energy bill “because apparently marriage is about sharing expenses.” In the caption, she asked her viewers, “What would you do in this situation?”

People on TikTok told Amy to divorce her husband

There was very little disagreement over whether the husband was in the wrong; the vast majority told Amy to leave her husband and never look back: “he has no respect for you, i hope you left him after that,” wrote one viewer. “Divorce him, see how much he laughs then,” another recommended.

Other commenters were a little more concerned about the husband’s behavior, claiming that what Amy’s husband had done was “domestic violence and he can go to jail.” Another warned Amy, “he had a fun from your suffering…he hates you for sure…what is coming next?”

“Yup this is abusive behaviour,” wrote another commenter, echoing the concerns of others, “whenever an appliance broke – washing machine, microwave etc my ex husband would refuse to replace it for months to “teach me a lesson for breaking it”” they added.

While many suggested that Amy divorce her husband, it seems like she may have already done so, as one viewer pointed out, “Her profile states she’s going through a divorce [an] Angel has her wings back.” Amy’s TikTok bio reads, “sharing the songs I wrote to help me get through my divorce,” and in other videos, she has also mentioned leaving her husband.
